Too bad - but probably, on balance, somewhat beneficial for Alberta's oil and gas exports. Maybe this will allow some of our technological fracking solutions to gain an edge too.
Fracking Fluids May Migrate to Aquifers, Researcher Says http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-0...cher-says.html "Chemically treated drilling fluid can migrate through thousands of feet of rock and endanger water supplies, said a hydrologist whose research calls into question the safety of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas." How do our fracking solutions differ from what's going on elsewhere?

Its like dropping a teaspoon of poision in a hot tub of water. You are still safe to drink it (similar concept to Homeopath, if you believed in that Quackery, would probably think this is good for you), the risks are overstated. Anyway, its nothing new in Alberta.

Hydraulic fracturing in Alberta is mostly done with, wait for it ..... water.
A company wanting to use fluids other than water has to apply to the ERCB stating what fluids exactly it proposes to use and why the frick it can't use water. A lot of problems with fracking have been in jurisdictions that just don't have the oversight or regulatory spine that we have here.

...not that anyone here advocating fracking is going to be drinking from potentially affected aquifers anyway.

But when you pump in millions of litres into each well, that becomes a lot of teaspoons of poison. You have to look at the total load you are placing into the system. Even 1 ppm of a poison can kill over a period of consumption.
