Random Edmonton shots II

All right! So after some feedback from the C2E community (thanks etownboarder, Gemini, norwoodguy, noodle, and lat) I have decided to start a new thread and mix things up a bit. I'll post a smaller size, linked through to the big one, but don't be surprised if I post the large version of a shot I particularily like

Also, I would like to get more chit-chat going on in here. Not just more feedback, although I very much appreciate it, but I would like folks to feel free to tell stories, recall memories and stuff like that. See a photo that reminds you of your youth? Tell us about it. See a building you used to work/live in? What was it like?

Anyway...we'll see how thing go. For now, here's a few shots from the last week or so. One of these was not taken in Edmonton, see if you can guess which one...

And booster..yes it is on Manning, but it is not a mosque, it is a Gurdwara, or Sihk Temple.

The first shots, I believe, were taken at the Edmonton Cemetery. I don't recall seeing the tall cross in the city. Is that the one taken elsewhere?

Do you do a lot of post processing? If so, what program do you use? Are there some good value ones you recommend?

Great shots. I love the ones with the "India" colours.

And Jimbo, I wouldn't say a lot of processing, no. For the large majority of shots I just add a saturation and contrast boost and run an unsharp mask using a raw editor: Raw Therapee. The program is free so that's good value. You have to shoot raw though. I don't use photoshop/aperture/lightroom or any of those so I can't speak to them...

Other free software I use is Hugin to stitch panos and Qtpfsgui for HDRs. I use The Gimp for more extreme edits like when I have to clone stuff out.

bulliver: your composition is spectacular! Are you using a special fisheye lens to capture those upward shots of buildings? A filter for the light?

reservoircat: Thanks, no filter. The lens is a 16-85mm so it's got a bit extra on the wide end than the usual wide angle zoom.

All right folks ... looks like this is the end of the line for me. This will be my last update to this thread...and probably one of my last posts to C2E period. It has not been the easiest decision, but I am moving back home to BC. I have had a fantastic three years here during this last stint, and an amazing 12 or so years here in Edmonton prior to that. I love Edmonton, it is my second home, and I always want her to do well, but personal circumstances have led to this decision, and at this point I need to do what is right for me.

I want to thank each and every person who has taken the time to look at my photos and comment on them. Without all the fantastic support here, at SSP, and on flickr I probably would have just put my camera away a long time ago. If you have enjoyed looking at these photos half as much as I have enjoyed taking them then it was worth it. Thanks again.

And so long, beautiful, I'll miss you

Just these past few days i would always pass different locations thinking "this would be a good place for bulliver to take pictures!"

Ahh that's too bad, im disappointed! But good luck with everything. I VERY much enjoyed ALLLLL of your photos best, everysingle one! you definitely have an eye for photography, and i hope you will keep it up. Will you keep your flickr updated?

@RTA...heh heh, you got me. Yes, it's a dead coyote. He rode by me on 87 Avenue, I was so stunned I almost didn't get the shop. Guesses on the pics flickr page range from 'he's trying to sell it to a furrier' to 'he's gonna eat that thing'. Your guess is as good as mine.

Yeah, a fair bit actually. I'll be commuting from Holyrood instead of Glenora. Not until spring, though, the bike is going into storage for the season - I'm too wussy to bike in the cold and snow.

Hey, right on Holyrood is a great area, and still nice and close to DT. Always liked Strathearn/Holyrood/Forest Heights myself.

Yeah, I was totally drawn to the area after seeing houses in the neighborhood. Still close to downtown (actually a little closer as the crow flies as well as the bus drives) and the river valley, Whyte Ave., etc., and within our price range. It's a great house, too. I'm pumped about it.
