No, you are not missing anything. The Mayor is off to Spain on a working holiday regarding Edmonton's bid for a WF. (Much like two councillors did a few months back...) Which I heard on 630 CHED today as wells talk about there being a cone of silence.

But why can't i find any news links for it and yet it was reported on CityTV Breakfast television and CHED as you say? I figured i would see it in the Edmonton Journal at least unless the story won't make it until tommorows edition?

It is possible that there is no news feed for it as no media picked it up beyond the initial "sound bites". There may or may not be more (some) information on this tomorrow.

The adage "If it bleeds, it leads" still defines the information that is distributed through mass media.

Well i'm just happy that this is another sign that Edmonton is serious about wanting to host the worlds fair cause you don't send politicians on a plane trip to another continent unless you're serious .... i hope

this sounds like the "next" office tower wait we endured a couple of years ago and the "imminent" YEG hotel construction. I'll know more when an announcement is made be it in October of 2008, 2009, or 2010...

Mayor in Spain to bring Expo to Edmonton

Updated: Sat Sep. 06 2008 14:14:25
Sonia Sunger, ctvedmonton.ca

Mayor Stephen Mandel will be at the World's Fair in Spain for the next ten days to learn how to successfully bring the event to Edmonton in the near future.

The city is planning to bid on the 2017 Expo. Mandel will meet with the World's Fair organizing committee in Saragossa, Spain to find out what Edmonton should do to be picked to host the event.

"We need to have a great deal of analysis yet and council needs to make some decisions in the fall as to the next step of allocating money to do this," said Mandel.

If Edmonton was picked as the host city for the 2017 Expo the event would fall on the same day as Canada's 150th birthday.

The World's Fair was first held in London in 1851.

In terms of economic and cultural impact, it is considered to be the third largest event in the world, behind the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.

I read the underlined and think back to Richard's "plan, study the plan, study the study of the plan" signature/rant.

Yeah, and then there was a previous incarnation of Richard's signature about egos and the like...

I'd like to see Edmonton have a champion (e.g., Daryl Katz, Stantec, or other corporate/civic leaders) behind them if they go ahead with a bid for the World's Fair.

My point is that if a World Fair bid for 2017 is in the making, JUST DO IT and quit fiddle-farting around, as this city is wont to do. 2017 is not that far away.

This was certainly discussed when I was part of the process.

I held "discovery" sessions with communication and political specialists and some very good names and contacts were made.

There needs to be several ambassadors/champions from ALL levels of government and different sectors of the community but there also needs to be a recognizable and respected face/voice for this to work.

I totally agree (with all your points) but I am also just saying that egos and the need for taking of credit (inventing the wheel) or "making a name/career" for oneself also rears it head in things like this.

Oooor, he's playing coy and waiting for certain other issues that are before council to come to a head. /lala

There is urgency. There is actual traction. Egos seems to be falling aside...for now.
