        • I wonder if this is the type of project that will be delayed/deferred/cut after the UCP slashes funding for municipalities.

          • This park is exactly the kind of “business handout thinly disguised as something for the public benefit” that the UCP loves.

(But this is supposed to be a CRL project.)

              • CRL or no CRL, it may not be politically tenable for city administration to forge ahead on this project -- at least in the next four years! -- while slashing services and projects (and spiking taxes) elsewhere.

                • Nah, the CRL makes downtown immune to the whims of the economy. Slash and burn everywhere except downtown. Which is as it should be.

                  • ^And Downtown taxes make the CRL viable, as well as expanding the amount of residential Downtown, and the amenities that are needed for that population.

                    • And WEM taxes also contribute but you don't see people seriously saying that WestJP should get to keep all the money in their neighbourhood. The CRL should have been used to pay off the arena period.

As it stands now, it's a slush fund that's for the benefit of one neighbourhood. And before IanO chimes in with his "Downtown is for everyone", so is the rest of the city. There's nothing preventing the downtownies from venturing out to other parts of the city to visit the city facilities there.

                      • ^Before the CRL, there was almost no infrastructure money being spent downtown on a per capita basis. It has different needs than, say the area around WEM does.

                        • AGA. RAM, Churchill Square to name just three. And the population downtown has been dropping despite the new towers

Industrial areas also contribute. How many parks for the workers to eat their lunches in?

                          But yeah, downtown gets nothing.

Please. There is a ton of investment that continues to occur before and beyond the CRL. What a colossal waste of money this park is.

                            • The CRL is ripping off the rest of the city. Tax dollars that would normally go in to shared revenues now diverted for an Arena our tax dollars built. You may say the CRL might eventually repay that, but its our interest rates that got that money, and that borrowing power could've been used for something that doesn't shelter money into vanity projects like this 51+ Million dollar park.

How can we spend money foolish like this when we can't even fund our LRT construction?

                              • CRL dollars are the lift in property taxes as a result of catalyst projects being invested into said area, many private projects that wouldn't go ahead otherwise. Paid for by Downtown taxes.

If this project enables the redevelopment of a huge swath of Downtown that otherwise is underdeveloped, I don't see how you come to the conclusion it's a waste of money. Doubt most people would agree with that interpretation.
