    Stumbled across this article / book review (see below). I'd read about how bad the olive oil industry was but hadn't heard of some of these other scams.

    As journalist Larry Olmsted suggests in his new book, Real Food/Fake Food (Algonquin Books, 2016), food fraud is rampant. When it comes to many commonplace items, what you think you’re buying is simply not what you’re getting.

    ..."I’d already covered the fake Parmesan here at Forbes.com before, but this was a different scam. For years, ... The Bloomberg story, which resonated widely in the media and was followed up by an in-depth investigation by Inside Edition, uncovered a new way to cheat consumers buying domestic Parmesan: cut or extend the already cheap product with something even cheaper, cellulose, sometimes totaling more than 20% of the product.

    American consumers had less than two weeks to digest the implications of cheese fraud before the next shoe dropped: 60 Minutes ran a detailed segment on olive oil fraud. For those like me who follow food fraud, this is hardly a new topic – Americans have been getting routinely ripped off by fake or adulterated olive oil for more than half a century. But to many listeners it was news when 60 Minutes estimated that a whopping 80-85% of all oil labeled extra virgin in this country – the highest grade possible – is not actually extra virgin. The really bad news is that some experts think these numbers are conservative. In one study a bestselling top national supermarket brand failed the standard 94% of the time.

    Cheese slices, I'm thinking calling it cheese is a big stretch. There is an artificial crab you can buy. It comes in like a block form. It's actually not bad but it's artificial (just forgot the name of it). Tinned mushrooms, horrible and should not be sold that way.
    Another issue now is all this 'organic' stuff in the market place. It seems everything has an organic brand now. Wonder how much of it is actually 'organic'.
    Gone............................and very quickly forgotten may I add.

        Cheese Executive Sentenced to Food Bank for Fake Parmesan

        Agents from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Internal Revenue Service raided company facilities in January 2013 after getting a tip about the fake cheese from a former employee. Afterward, the company used real ingredients, causing profits to plunge, according to court documents. Castle Cheese is now in bankruptcy proceedings.

        False-label claims in 100 percent grated Parmesan products are a problem in the U.S., with some companies looking to save money by using filler such as cellulose, an anti-clumping additive derived from wood pulp, Bloomberg News reported in a Feb. 16 article. In a test of 100 percent grated Parmesan brands by an independent lab, Bloomberg News found cellulose levels of as much as 8.8 percent.

            It's not actually artificial, they call it "imitation" and it's made with Pollock fish like Howie has mentioned.
