  • Edmonton - Entertainment Capital of Alberta?

Over the years I've noticed that Edmonton has been getting big shows. In fact, Edmonton is the preferred destination in Alberta for major concerts and draws.

Below is a link from the Journal confirming this:

Edmonton needs to bang her drum louder, and advertise this better.

Think of all of the entertainment infrastructure to be built downtown: the RAM, the Galleria, the new Arena.

Then there was the expansion of the Expo Centre, Hall D added to the Shaw, and no sign that the Northlands Coliseum is going to close with the new Arena opening.

Then think of all the acts that get booked at the Casinos, particularly Century Casino.

Entertainment Capital of Alberta? Absolutely! Why not Western Canada?!

I would love to see more Las Vegas style advertising for some of the acts that go on in Edmonton. I hardly ever know what the Symphony, Opera, and Citadel Theatre are doing unless I grab a Vue Weekly.

When the heck is that new venue opening to replace EEC? Edmonton has had a clear void of mid-sized acts since that placed closed. I don't miss the venue, but I miss the artists that appeared there.

I kind of dislike the term "Capital" referring to anything other than the seat of Government as I find it Cheezy.

However it can't be denied that we have a fortunate combination of a high disposable income and youthful population base in the region and entire catchment area which can support this level of entertainment.

What I would like to see would be first class one stop entertainment website that a person could go to plan their activities and trips to Edmonton. Something like a Las Vegas style website to list concerts events, exhibitions and accommodations. I should be possible to book your complete packages to Edmonton in real easy manner.

Besides the concerts and sporting events , there are so many add on activities dining , shopping etc.

In this region , you can also shoot , skydive , learn to drive a stock car , take yoga , tai chi , even take a circus performer course and many other options. If all the activities could all be found on one website , you could certainly attract a lot of interest from all those men and women in those 100K plus jobs in the Fort macs, Cold lake , Grande prairie , NW BC and NWT regions who only have few days off ( but thousands to spend) in Edmonton .

Canada's Vegas... Hmmm... I like that idea!!

We have the venues. Downtown is going to be amazing, jasper ave is super long and with more bars, pubs, eateries and shops going in on that strip, rice howard, 104th, 124th, galleria, RAM, AED, Winspear expansion, plus citadel, churchill sq, shaw, lrt to those sectors. Northands improving, we could use 1 or 2 more mid size venues like reds/eds/EEC, We have places like union hall but could use another couple of those that can cater to that size of show. Would love it if something opened up at west ed again (speaking of which what is in that spot now??). Another similar sized venue opening up downtown say near jasper would be amazing! Also wish something similarly sized opening up on whyte (with the LRT going there!!!) cause that would be very very cool. Whyte ave needs more shopping and a bigger venue to draw people to. And more diversity in bars and pubs. And honestly get rid of the car dealership...

A better title would be "Edmonton - Entertainment Capital of It's Catchment Area".

The capital city of a region happens to offer the most in terms of entertainment and this is considered news?.. Anywhere else it would be seen as stating the bloody obvious.

It's been said before that one of the reasons Edmonton gets so many big shows is that The Saddledome in Calgary has very poor acoustics for rock bands and other concerts.
It has something to do with the shape of the roof in the Saddledome.
Gone............................and very quickly forgotten may I add.

It's not acoustics. It's a matter of structural strength. The Saddledome roof can't support enough rigging for a lot of the biggest shows these days.
