    • here’s hoping those photos don’t do the interiors justice...

The natural light through the windows will be nice. I commented previously about the interior pillars being an interesting design element and this appears to confirm it to be a theme. Wished there was more use of natural wood though to warm things up a bit.

        • I just shed a tear at the design of the Ottawa central library.

          • Keep in mind that the budget for that library is over double and they weren't handcuffed by an existing structure or significant hazardous materials abatement costs. I'm not defending the absolute embarrassment that the Milner has turned in to, but it's not a fair comparison in the slightest.

            • We're never going to have an apt comparison because nobody but Edmonton lacks the sense to do what we did. Our half-assed effort straight outta the gate is further damning, not excusing.

It's interesting that Ottawa feels much the same about itself, right down to a brand new, broken LRT. I've never been so I can't compare.

Built in 1973, looks as ugly as can be

                  But the interior is stunning

Ottawa doesn't have the grandeur of some larger capitals, but I think it has a quire nice mix of old and new buildings. Clean, fairly well kept up, nothing too hideous, but yes overall a bit bland.

The writer at Macleans sure seems a bit hard to please doesn't he? It's probably a good thing he didn't come here to see our library, I can only imagine what he would write. I don't think it would be very kind, but maybe it would be exactly the kick in the pants needed on this.

Actually the Ottawa Library, despite whatever horrible acronym they call it by, looks fairly good in the pictures both on the outside and the inside. They chose to go for lots of glass windows instead of the bunker/remand centre/industrial storage building look. Imagine that, what a novel concept!

As a consolation, I do get the feeling their LRT does is a bit more messed up than ours. Growing pains perhaps, as LRT is fairly new there.

                      • Well that's good to see that Second Cup will be back to the library.

They seem to have eliminated most of their locations downtown in the last year (City Centre - gone, Manulife - gone and 108th and Jasper - gone, not sure if ATB Place will remain), so it might be a good idea to bring this one back.

However, they also seem to have eliminated almost every one of their coffees I can tolerate. Interestingly, the Starbucks nearby to where I work seems very busy.

                            • So is there any concrete date set for the building to reopen?
