  • Jane's Walks YEG - May 4-7, 2018

    So many great options.

    https://janewalksyeg.wordpress.com/options-for-walks/

One of these two for me Saturday:

    TALL TALES
Walk Leaders: David Holdsworth, Kirstin Smith and Robert Lipka
    Date & Time: Saturday, May 5, 10:30 A.M. Approx 1.5 hours
Starting location: McLeod Building, 10134 100 St NW
Description: Look up, look WAY up. Visit some of Edmonton’s giants and learn how urban design can help tame the impacts of tall buildings. The tour starts at Edmonton’s oldest tall building and works its way through downtown to some of our more recent giants. Together we will uncover how good urban design can help transform a space into a people friendly place through the arrangement and design of the built form.

RELICS & REMNANTS: BITS & PIECES OF EDMONTON’S (Mostly) LOST HISTORIC ARCHITECHTURE
    Walk Leader: Dan Rose
    Date & Time: Saturday, May 5, 11:00 A.M. Approx 1.5 hours
Starting location: City Hall Clock Tower – SE Corner by the pool – #1 Sir Winston Churchill Square

Description: Have you ever wondered where all of Edmonton’s old buildings went? What happened after their fateful demise? Was demolition truly the end? Or do they live on hidden in plain sight…?
Look no further! As a part of Jane’s Walk 2018, “Relics & Remnants” will take you on a tour of Edmonton’s downtown area and exploring the, curious and largely forgotten, architectural fragments of historic buildings that have been re-purposed after demolition. As we re-discover these physical pieces of our past, you’ll learn about the urban fabric of our city, how it’s evolved, and what lessons these fragments can teach us about design, our city and historic preservation. A google map of the walk will be posted to my twitter account in advance with historic photos of the buildings that were. Check out @the_rosbif for a link. Stay tuned.

Saturday, lost heritage - 2 hours of sun soaked touring the city we have and the remnants of what we don't have any more.

Sunday, the story of Edmonton's China towns. 2 more sun soaked hours of fascinating history.

(For those who missed, the Chinese Young Leaders Council plans to run this particular tour all summer (starting in June) every second Sunday.

Also, if you're vacationing first week of May - check Jane's website to see if your destination has similar walks: http://janeswalk.org/cities/

Oh, speaking of which, there's a walk next Sunday (May 13) in St. Albert: http://janeswalkstalbert.ca/
