Edmonton a key access route in oil and gas transportationEIA only major airport closest to 16% of Canada's total investment and 55% of Canada's oil, gas and mining
By MICHAEL BROWN, SPECIAL TO THE EDMONTON SUN

When the business world eyeballs an atlas of the unlimited potential of Canada's North, the first thing it looks for is a route up.

The Edmonton Airport Authority has the same maps, so it knows exactly what everyone else is already thinking, and they created a slogan to fit their intentions: "To be the North's preferred gateway to the World and the World's preferred gateway to the North."

"It was adopted this past fall in recognition of Edmonton's traditional role as a major service and supply hub in the north," says Jim Rudolph, corporate communications manager of Edmonton Airports. "It's a great opportunity to continue to be a significant part of that".

Currently the Edmonton International Airport is situated as the major airport closest to 16% of Canada's total investment and 55% of Canada's oil, gas and mining.

"Approximately 4.5 million kg of cargo is shipped from the Edmonton International Airport to Canada's far north each year," says Rudolph. "It's a crucial supply hub for many communities.

"With isolated communities in the North, air service is really the only key link. This new vision underscores the global importance of Canada's resource-rich frontier.

Rudolph says air transportation provides the key logistical link in northern resource development, including being the only means of transportation nine months of the year for northern diamond production, which is currently valued at $2 billion annually.

Last year, the Edmonton International Airport was used as a staging ground to move people and materials for the construction of an air strip for Canadian Natural Resources Ltd's $10.8 billion Horizon oilsands project.

"This is a great example of how an airport can be used to supply northern development," says Rudolf, explaining that Edmonton will also be a primary distribution point for work on any one of three proposed major pipeline projects, which includes the $7 billion-plus Mackenzie Valley pipeline.

"Once there is a pipeline route established, Edmonton Airports will be on the forefront of that."

And since the early days of the Second World War, it has been known that Edmonton's latitude makes for the shortest direct freighter flights to and from Europe and Asia and across North America

"Being located on polar routes severely reduces travel time in the air," says Rudolph, adding with a new "Open Skies" agreement signed between the U.S. and Canada which effectively reduces air restrictions over each other's soil, there will be even more importance placed on the services provided by the Edmonton International Airport.

"The new Open Skies agreement will help fulfill vision in cargo and help attract improved courier services to Fort McMurray," says Rudolph.

"We have to ensure we capitalize on that." To ensure all local stakeholders are on board with maximizing this opportunity, Rudolph says Edmonton Airports will plan and implement a Regional Air Service Development Forum in 2006. "The forum will provide an opportunity for Northern and regional airports and stakeholders to meet face-to-face with airlines and learn from industry speakers," he says.

"It will also be a chance for the Edmonton International Airport and northern airports to look at ways of helping each other operationally."
