  • How about an e-sports stadium in Edmonton?

    Thoughts?

Let's get caught up and ahead of the curve of many cities and build a semi-bespoke/but multi-purpose/use venue.

Thinking somewhere between Norquest/MacEwan in the UW area.

Sounds like a great idea for a private enterprise to take on, and go ahead without any asks from any order of government.

Zero problem with it as an entirely private venture, but given the current budget constraints facing CoE & Alberta I really think there's far more important, crucial & public-serving needs that should be addressed before handing out money to create or prop up private businesses.

What's an "e-sport?" Is it something like what I saw on the weekend at the LRC? the indoor soccer field turned into a Geek-filled-Dr.Pepper-obesity rampart-Videogamer-nerd convention?

Yup. What's wrong with their parent's basement?

Like it or not, understand it or not, e-sports are a growing phenomenon and this could be a good fit for Edmonton while the AI/gaming industry grows here. Seems like something Bioware and other game studios could be part of.

There is a lot of money in it, and if rumours of the inclusion of e-sports as a future demo event in the Olympics are true this could be a real foot in the door for Edmonton. Agreed that it should be privately funded though. At this point it's too much of a novelty.

Sounds like a great way to re-purpose an older suburban movie theatre. If there's even actually a business case for something like that. No reason for the city to get involved though. If there's a need the private sector will develop it
Over promise and under deliver. It’s the most Edmonton thing you can do.

Sounds like something Katz could build in the ice district. A bunch of people sitting around watching other people do stuff.

Or an old abandoned warehouse in Nisku.....the "kids" I saw playing their "e-sports," look like they have never played a "real sport" in their lives. Not a word of a lie, the "refreshment" station ONLY had 2L bottles of Orange Crush and Dr.Pepper stacked about 6ft. high....I'm sure if I looked closer - there was probably a "diaper changing" station so that the participants could easily p*ss their pants rather then "waste" time using the shitters.....

                      Great idea!

For those above, it is a massive and growing form of entertainment/business and teams travel around the world to compete. Perhaps Improbable and Bioware could help move this forward... time for some meetings.

What about repurposing the Coliseum? They already have a jumbo tron (or was that removed?)

but the ndps plan for Alberta is to spend spend spend spend... why should the ucp or the city of edmonton show any fiscal restraint when the solution is to spend spend spend.

Really? that's the NDP plan was to spend spend spend? Really? I don't believe that was one of their campaign promises, at least not as eloquently as you've put it.

Lets not forget that there is two types of debt, infrastructure debt, and fiscal debt. When you neglect to maintain or build things when they are required (hospitals, highways, schools) you develop an infrastructure debt and that debt can quickly grow out of control. The NDP plan showed them to balance the budget within a reasonable time frame, and one that doesn't differ much from the UCP timeline.
Have we already forgot about the former PC party and the many years of corruption and mismanagement of our fiscal and infrastructure assets? Schools, hospitals and roadwork were continually put off and deffered for later. Just look at the SW Henday. It was supposed to be expanded to 3 lanes each at 40,000 cars per day, and we hit that in 2011. And its mostly the same yahoos that were in the PC party that are now in the UCP....

spend spend spend sounds something a UCP voter would say when #factsdontmatter #betteroffwithkenney_andnorealreasonofferwhyyoucam etothatconclusion just cheer the home team! rah rah rah.
