  • Edmonton's version of the white hat

As you know, Calgarians and Banffites make their visiting dignitaries wear those silly white cowboy hats.

I saw this in the Edmonton Rush thread:

Anyone else thinks this gift basket should be Edmonton's answer to the Calgarian white hat?

I could do without the frozen supermarket perogies and sausage from out of town.

Shame the ol' Perogy House burned down. I think we can do better than that for a gift basket.

There are more than enough Ukrainian churches in Edmonton to provide much better perogies than Cheemo.

How about a pair of special edition green running shoes? Green as in the colour of the river valley, dominant colour of the Esks jerseys, and generally the colour of the Northern Lights. Plus it's a nod to both The Running Room (Edmonton started), and all of the green tech we're utilizing in our recycling and biofuel industries.

We need to brand Edmonton as 'green' in the sense that we're not just about 'dirty oil'. We're not all roughnecks and rednecks like our neighbor to the South. Up here we celebrate being green, progressive (nanotech, higher learning, etc.), and active.

Edmonton will help you get where you're going. --Green Running Shoes
Calgary will stand out in the crowd and take the recognition --White Cowboy Hat

^Sausage from out of town? You think the vineyard for the wine in their gift basket is in Rochester? (The winery isn't even in town.) When did having something from or in Edmonton mean excluding Northern Alberta? Seems very insular to me. (Not to mention that SMP's restaurant is in fact in Edmonton.)

But there is no comparison between this odd gift basket and Calgary's white hat, nor would I recommend we offer it to any future dignitary. Other than the ease of shipping, I don't think it showcases the best or most unique flavour of our region in the most appropriate way. It's...OK? Hopefully brighter minds can find something better to represent Edmonton.

I know the restaurant is here. I'm just saying that if I were putting together a gift basket I would have gone another way. The sausage is made in Mundare and sold here. It is not "Edmontonian"

Everyone knows that the sausage from Widynowski's is better anyway.

Back to the point, though: I think that Edmonton's answer to the white Stetson should be the boater hat... Especially if Klondike Days might make a return.
