    Answer to Q15

What is the EPS doing to deal with the ever increasing gang populations in the city. I've heard Millwoods and the Northside are quite bad.

Gangs and the crimes associated to them are a matter that the Edmonton Police Service continues to view with the upmost importance. In recognizing the harmful impact that organized crime has on our city, we have taken several measures to get in front of gangs and reduce their impact.

Once separate entities, our Drug Unit and Gang Unit have now amalgamated into one team. This move has brought a new level of synergy to our investigations in this area due to the fact that drugs and gangs typically go hand-in-hand. Further, staffing levels to the new unit have been increased as well.

The new Drug and Gang Unit now employs the services of a full-time crime analyst. This provides an enhanced capacity for us to target those gangs with the highest propensity for violence, increasing public safety. A shift to larger, project-based investigations has also been undertaken with a mind to obtain stiffer jail sentences in court.
