VUE Weekly closing its doors after more than 20 years as Edmonton’s alternative paper

EDMONTON—VUE Weekly has announced it will be printing its last pages at the end of November.

The alternative weekly newspaper with a strong emphasis on Edmonton arts and entertainment was started in 1995.

According to VUE president Robert Doull, support for an alternative weekly in the city has been going down for several years.

“We decided that we would cease publication now, rather than face another year of diminishing resources,” Doull said in a statement.

St. Albert-based Great West Newspapers will take over the ownership of several publications from Aberdeen Publishing group, VUE Weekly’s parent organization. That includes the Hot Summer Guide, Cool Winter Guide, the Bar and Restaurant Guide, the Best of Edmonton, and the Golden Fork Awards.

“We could not have asked for a better home for these publications,” Doull said.

The president of Great West, Brian Bachyrnski, said the company sees a “strong future” for all of the publications.

“We are able to provide greater support to our customers than VUE was able to do on its own. Our digital agency will now be available to those customers and we will be able to provide them with an enhanced digital marketing presence,” he said in a statement.
It’s unclear if VUE Weekly’s website will remain in operation. No one at the paper was immediately available for comment.
“You have to dream big. If we want to be a little city, we dream small. If we want to be a big city, we dream big, and this is a big idea.” - Mayor Stephen Mandel, 02/22/2012
