This thread is to ask questions of Candidate Shawn Philip Fairbridge - Councillor Ward 3.

All members are asked to allow the Candidate to post first in his or her thread. This is to allow the Candidate ample opportunity to introduce their background, platform, and any other information they may feel is pertinent to this discussion.

All decorum expected of members in the C2E Ask Forums will be expected here. An addendum is that posters may ask as many questions as they wish, but they are also politely asked to follow any instructions on posting or reply timelines that the Candidate expresses.

Thank you to all for participating in the 2010 Connect2Edmonton Election Forum!

Edmonton City Center Airport- Development of the airport land would focus population growth into the heart of the city rather than the outskirts. A northern LRT extension will be more cost effective through a closed airport rather than an open one. A phased closure means less cost to the city therefore less cost to the tax payers.

Urban Sprawl-- Focusing development in more mature neighbourhoods without overcrowding is a big issue; let’s increase development downtown as well as on the ECCA land.

LRT Extension-- A northern LRT route would allow faster, more efficient travel for those living in northern communities such as Castledowns, Grand Trunk and Greisbach, etc. and also help with traffic congestion. However, more funding from the provincial government is crucial. Faster, more efficient express bus routes should be planned for added convenience, and to provide a feasible alternative to car transportation.

Downtown Arena-- Though I indisputably support a downtown arena, it will take time and a lot of planning to make sure tax payers won't foot the bill: that it remains a true private endeavour. Apart from increased revenues, A downtown arena should create a more liveable, vibrant community in itself. One of the first steps in revitalizing the downtown area would be to provide incentives for small business development in the downtown core. This issue has a direct correlation to the closure of the Edmonton City Center Airport.

Safer Streets -- The police service is a vital part of every community. Increased funding will allow for an increased task force, training, more advanced equipment and intimately safer streets. More surveillance cameras should be set up around the city to deter criminal activity.

Regardless of your opinion on whether or not the City Centre Airport should stay open/be closed, what is your opinion on the failed plebiscite? Should we have had one or was city council correct in voting not to have one this election?

The Alberta Aviation Museum Association, in 2006 a small community museum now the 3rd largest aviation collection in Canada, is a feature tourism attraction in North Edmonton currently serves (5) veterans organizations, (3) Heritage organizations, (2) Youth organizations as well as a series of (6) modern aviation volunteer organizations such as the Civil Air Search And Rescue Association. The Museum also has the most advanced K-12 aviation education programming and is currently an operationally self sufficient not for profit operation that receives no operational funding from any level of government.

This is a facility that currently receives over 150,000 individual uses per year and attracts visitors from around the world.

What do you, as a candidate commit to specifically doing to insure the ongoing success and expansion of the Alberta Aviation Museum with the closure of the City Centre Airport and the damage it will cause to the facility?

I have been directed to ask on behalf of the boards of this facility.

        Thomas Hinderks
        Executive Director
        Alberta Aviation Museum

The lack of responses by Fairbridge to your questions make me want to vote for somebody else.
