  • Candidate Andrew Knack

This thread is to ask questions of Candidate Andrew Knack – Councillor Ward 1.

All members are asked to allow the Candidate to post first in his or her thread. This is to allow the Candidate ample opportunity to introduce their background, platform, and any other information they may feel is pertinent to this discussion.

All decorum expected of members in the C2E Ask Forums will be expected here. An addendum is that posters may ask as many questions as they wish, but they are also politely asked to follow any instructions on posting or reply timelines that the Candidate expresses.

Thank you to all for participating in the 2010 Connect2Edmonton Election Forum!

    Thank You!

I am very excited to be a part of the Civic Election Forum on Connect2Edmonton for the second time. As you may know, I have been an active reader and occasional contributor on C2E since joining in 2007. I have learned many things from the members of this community and I thank you for allowing me to be a part of it.

For those of you who are new to Connect2Edmonton allow me to give you a brief background. I am a graduate from the University Of Alberta School Of Business and currently work as a retail manager. I currently serve as the Vice-President of the Meadowlark Community League, President of The Californian Meadowlark Condo Board and Block Captain for Capital City Clean-up.

Although I officially announced my candidacy on October 18th, 2009, I have been involved with many of the communities in Ward 1 over the past three years. I am pleased with the overall direction of our city and believe that I will add the balanced approach to have Edmontonians working together towards a common vision.

My entire platform can be found at www.andrewknack.com. Please take some time to read through my platform and then ask me any questions.

    Thank you,

    Andrew Knack
    Ward 1 City Councillor Candidate

The Alberta Aviation Museum Association, in 2006 a small community museum now the 3rd largest aviation collection in Canada, is a feature tourism attraction in North Edmonton currently serves (5) veterans organizations, (3) Heritage organizations, (2) Youth organizations as well as a series of (6) modern aviation volunteer organizations such as the Civil Air Search And Rescue Association. The Museum also has the most advanced K-12 aviation education programming and is currently an operationally self sufficient not for profit operation that receives no operational funding from any level of government.

This is a facility that currently receives over 150,000 individual uses per year and attracts visitors from around the world.

What do you, as a candidate commit to specifically doing to insure the ongoing success and expansion of the Alberta Aviation Museum with the closure of the City Centre Airport and the damage it will cause to the facility?

I have been directed to ask on behalf of the boards of this facility.

          Good day Thomas,

I have to start by thanking your for being the first person to ask me a question. I was worried that the entire 4 weeks would pass without a single question.

I want to start by addressing the quote above. I am concerned that the first thought is that the closure of the City Centre Airport will cause damage to the facility. If we assume that closure is going to make the museum less successful, it will be hard for people to look forward and create a facility that is even better than before. Once we are in the right mindset, I believe the significant increase in population on the lands as well as the fact that the area will be serviced by our LRT system will actually result in even more individual uses per year. The planned development should honour the heritage of the airport - calling the newly formed community Blatchford Community would be a start. Assuming there is a central park in the new development, we can have some historical statues that honour the aviation heritage and direct residents and visitors to the museum.

          Thank you for the question,

          Andrew Knack

            Morning Andrew

            Thank you for your response.

            To your comment:
" I am concerned that the first thought is that the closure of the City Centre Airport will cause damage to the facility"

Significant research was completed after studying Aviation Museums around the world and a document forwarded to council regarding the effects of the closure of the airport on the Aviation Museum...this was delivered approx 14-18months ago.

The question is based on the implications shown by the results of the research.

I want to take a moment and thank those involved with Connect2Edmonton for hosting the candidate's forum. I would have loved to be asked more questions but I know not many of the members of C2E are Ward 1 residents. If given the honour to represent Ward 1, I will continue to visit and post on this site.

Although I'm sure everyone who participates on C2E is planning on voting, please make sure you call up your friends and family to get them out to vote. Thank you again for hosting this forum.

Andrew, while I'm not in your ward, my brother and a friend are, and I told them to take a strong look at your platform and consider voting for you.
They're going to park their car over there. You're going to park your car over here. Get it?
