Thread: JW Marriott Hotel & Residences | 192.2 m, 630', 56 floors | under construction

I see where you are coming from, I just find it ironic that the person answering the question happens to be the person that has the biggest beef with him and i'm going to call it out. That's all.

Back to JW Marriott discussion please.

What's truly ironic is that you don't realize or acknowledge your own hypocritical beef with me when calling out my beef with Ian. You jumped on me with all the glee & intensity I'm sure you projected onto me when I replied to a question that while not directed at me would not have gotten a reply from the involved party.

I don't think a 6 word comment with a emoji attached to it classifies as "glee & intensity" bud.

At least on Youtube, the comments are anonymous, and it is different people flaming each other.

My intent wasn't to stir up the pot with everyone else, since my emojis suggested more slight jest than anything else. Oi.

Maybe, Noodle, Ian, and Medwards just need to meet in person and sort out their differences.

    Ha ha, yeah, maybe.

For considering a single project's impact against what was there previously, stretching the imagination to new levels, its competition probably would have been AGT/Imperial Oil/the little stump that's most famous as Williams Engineering. (Now known as Telus/ATB/Stump)

Arguably also the Edmonton Centre project (with TD, MNP, Oxford, and Sutton Place towers and the East Parkade) was up there too, although it didn't feature a "new tallest".
We don't even really have a true scope of the scale of this project until we see what is planned on the Baccarat site and the north lands. Like you said; those comparisons are a far stretch. I'd say the Mall was comparable though.
Hmmmmn. Yeah for "wow" factor and cultural impact and city image etc., but not in the "most significant update to Edmonton's skyline" kind of way. (lol)

The corners are curved, but each panes of glass are actually straight. JW's corners have legit curved glass.

Looks like a giant wrap around patio and pool in the rendering... but looking at the pictures, the structural steel for the pedway looks like its higher than the cantilever.

^ Podium framing from north. It matches the model from the previous post in that the bridging to Rogers Place ends at the third podium level.

No as this area is all brand new vs my brain that has been ingrained with empty unpaved lots since I first arrived to Canada in late 1979. My first trip to downtown was spring 1981 and that lot was already there. For me, it is a jubilant feeling to witness this, but I also feel as if this is all a dream. I just never thought progress in the core could change so rapidly like this.

Even at their respective heights, they have already changed the core immensely. I can't wait until they are both fully done.

The tower portion of the hotel is about half the height of the residential so the tower will be three times the height it is now.

Less as the high podium floors and generally higher guest floors in the hotel are more like 37% of the total heighth or thereabouts.

Looks to me (when I was downtown this afternoon) that Stantec may have caught up to Marriott in overall height. If it hasn't, then they are very close. I had hoped that perhaps Marriott might hold a short-lived crown as Edmonton's tallest tower once it surpasses Manulife, but given that the height of a single storey of the office portion of Stantec is greater than the height of a storey of Marriott, and that each tower is adding about one storey per week, I'm guessing that Stantec will surpass Manulife before Marriott does.

^They are working on the transition from the JW to The Legends which always takes extra time. Read somewhere on the Stantec thread it takes about six weeks.

^^ Also, the Marriot will be going quicker than one floor a week once they are into the typical residential levels.

Stantec will hit a "brick wall" at around floor 30. 2m thick sky raft slab to support the transition from the commercial to residential column layout. Will take a full month for that one floor.

The scale of these buildings is really starting to show. Just massive.

For those in the know, I ask: Will JW have a destination type lobby? Last time I was in Vancouver, a friend took me to Fairmont Pacific Rim and the lobby was jam packed on a Thursday evening, with live music, dancing, the works. I'm hoping JW will do something similar.

I've noticed that in other buildings in Vancouver such as the new TELUS building. I think it's a Vancouver thing. They have a grand piano, coy fish pond, a waterfall like the Citadel but nicer, and much more. It's not even a landmark tower. Meanwhile I haven't seen anything of the type in Calgary despite it having so many interesting towers. Definitely a west coast idea.

I thought the Calgary development (franchise) was a Residence by Marriott for long term stays. Though I bet they are sorry they started it for that clientele market as the need for long term stays has evaporated.

JW has standards and the one in Edmonton must meet these and no doubt it will.

Looks like the 24th floor is poured. The residences must be close to starting:

Those interiors -- tasteful, stunning, pure class. Understated and expensive.

Surprised no one's pointed this out yet, but they're clearly on the condo floors now. Note the slightly smaller floor plate.

Plus the extra thick floor plate seen in this photo (and taller floor).

They're moving at an average of one floor per week. I'm guessing that the Marriott will reach the height of the Edmonton Tower by the end of August.

Very nice. I think West Block has them beat though. Could be personal preference.

The interiors are nice, but at the end of the day, all new condo interiors look much the same to me (quartz counters, modern tile, clean cupboards, if high end fancy appliances, etc.) - unless they are messed up (e.g. lots of columns / badly designed spaces, which these don't "appear" to be). The pool table is unrealistic scale wise (I have a pool table in my condo, it takes up a ton of space).

Had a good meeting with the new Dir Sales/Marketing for this JW. Very exciting times and lots of anticipation.

The pool table pic appears to be the amenity/lounge room.

I am a huge fan of the Ice District and the new towers but those blinds really detract from the look of the building. Hope they can come up with a solution.

Short of changing the glazing so it's reflective/mirrored, what solution is there?
