^Typically not the best way to distiguish the two structures but I would admit the transition on the north facade is poorly handled. Poor setbacks and demarcation between new and old. Having the old façade "pop out" is quite common and the best treatment.

Is the brick really nearly flush with the glass wall there? I was going to comment on it but thought it was just an illusion caused by the angle the photo was taken at. Seems like a poor design choice for an otherwise really good project if it really is like that.

Actually from the webcam, it's not flush...not that bad afterall

It is far from ugly but miss the overall value of preservation imo. The original brick layout should have remained in the entirety with the tower on top. I thought that was their plan...This concept just leaves the antiquated portion extremely underwhelmed. The facade could potential be obscured entirely when they add the brick accent all the way up as they are " front heavy" with brick .

Looks pretty good. This development is on the level of what you'd see in a place like New Westminster; and I'd argue that the preservation of the original facade is better than what you see out here in the West. Good job Edgar, it raises the bar.
There was no need to change that plaque. We are the City of Champions.

Encourage you all to take a look in person, again looks better than the pictures. Really changes the feel of that intersection/block.

I snapped a quick pic yesterday of the north side, so you can see it from this angle:

To each their own, I guess. Comparative to other successful facade retention projects, this one did "okay". Good for the City, but I think it means we still need better policy like in other cities.

It is a great tower on aesthetics; I really wanted the whole original podium-extension included as much as possible. As is the facade is kind of underwhelmed. That stated , I'm thrilled with this nevertheless.

Is that red brick going up the skyscraper or stucco painted red? It is very hard to see what it is in the photo.
    Edmonton first, everything else second.

    It's red brick.

Love the Juliet balconies with the dual doors that will open up in the podium brick.

Aren't they actually just windows rather than doors ?

I think it looks great but seems to be more of a faux Juliet balcony...

Those windows open, you can see that from the design of them. And when opened you have the Juliet wrought iron. They are meant to open up the living room to light - and in this case exhaust fumes. Well at least until the City reduces lanes of traffic and electric and natural gas vehicles become the norm. Future proof design element.

^ for sure opening - I wasn't saying otherwise, but with the vertically stacked panes, you won't be comfortably leaning over the wrought iron railing as a true Juliet balcony would allow...

No ones going to argue against light and fresh(?) air but you seemed to be alluding to the style of the Juliet balcony which I think looks compromised here.

The original building had some Juliet balconies on the front and north side. The new design does use a different window style which fully open, which I believe is preferable and consistent with what you would actually find in Europe with a Juliet. Why the original building did not have 2 panel windows may have to do with availability of manufacture or materials in Edmonton at time of design and construction.

I don't know where you get that - if you google "Juliet balconies in Europe" virtually all of them are in front of doors - or, full height opening windows if you want to play a semantics game.

Yup, and if you didn’t know you would think the new was just built behind the old. Great job.

No problem, I needed to get out for a few good walks as I've been a little in active of late and got a contract coming up that's going to be heavy on walking. Maybe I'll try to do another one in the fall depending on my schedule, and agreed on the side walk I went the first time to take a picture of the front and had to double back as I missed where I had to cross Jasper. Also I hope the next time I do this I don't get bit by some woman's dog while crossing the street...

Has anyone looked into getting a unit in there? I did the other day, trading emails with a leasing rep, and I was disappointed by 2 things: 1) there are no south-facing 1-bedroom suites, and 2) most of the 1-bedroom floorplans have the kitchen along one wall of what is essentially a hallway between the back of the suite and the front. Even on squarish floorplans the kitchen is along one wall without even an island, exposed to the rest of the place, like a bachelor suite.

Overall nice; I stated from first render I didnt like the orange brick facade rising near the top, I still dont now that I see it. That said, I'm glad it is up and should revitalize the area with significance.
