Default Edmonton Municipal Election 2013 - Candidate Rumour Mill

Well folks, the election is just under 9 months away, so I thought I'd start things off early. This thread is for who is running and who might be running for election to Edmonton's City Council.

Obviously, the list is going to be small this early, so I'm starting it off with incumbents plus perennial candidates, minus whoever has declared they won't be running in 2013. Post anything you might have heard (hopefully with a source...) and I'll keep this up to date as we get closer to the election.

    Confirmed candidates are in bold.

    Mayor
    Stephen Mandel
    Dave Dowling
    Bob Ligertwood

    Ward 1
    Linda Sloan
    Andrew Knack

    Ward 2
    Kim Krushell
    Don Koziak

    Ward 3
    Dave Loken

    Ward 4
    Ed Gibbons

    Ward 5
    Karen Leibovici
    Dan St. Pierre

    Ward 6
    Jane Batty
    Heather MacKenzie

    Ward 7
    Tony Caterina
    Brendan Van Alstine
    Dave Colburn

    Ward 8
    Ben Henderson

    Ward 9
    Bryan Anderson

    Ward 10
    Michael Walters

    Ward 11
    Kerry Diotte
    Chinwe Okelu

    Ward 12
    Amarjeet Sohi
    Chuck McKenna

    I'll start us off...

-Stephen Mandel is mulling his options.
-Don Iveson will not seek re-election according to this Global Edmonton report from November 2011.
-Andrew Knack looks to be in, judging by his Facebook page.
-Brendan Van Alstine has a countdown to election day on his website.
-EPSB trustee Heather MacKenzie will launch her campaign for Ward 6 this Thursday, according to Dave Cournoyer.

I have a feeling Mayor Mandel will not run for a 3rd term. He has accomplished a lot and if he can get a few loose ends tied up I think he will retire. He has been taking to task on a few things and I think after a while it must wear on a person. It would be nice if he and his wife could just sit back and enjoy their grandchildren. He has done a good job running the city. As for the others on council, well, there are a few career councilors on the board. We all know who they are.
Gone............................and very quickly forgotten may I add.

This election is going to be interesting with all that will be on the plate...

I think you will see a number of new faces and new topics crop up as well as the last vestiges of others.

It's way to early to predict but I expect you will see some strong contenders for mayor come out of the wood work as well as some of the wards.

Meantime there is a City to run and many people I talk to are watching whats happening in the months between now and September to measure the incumbents.

In my highly biased personal opinion

Michael Walters is likely running in Ward 10 as per this article from the Journal http://www.edmontonjournal.com/life/...512/story.html. Dave Colburn is also considering a Council run http://www.edmontonjournal.com/news/...262/story.html and although a specific Ward was not mentioned by Colburn, Ward D overlaps with Ward 7.

You would also be correct in stating that I am running in Ward 1.

I believe Colburn will run in Ward 7.

I think Batty will not run again. She's had three terms and I think five campaigns. Probably ready for a change. If Batty does not run then Henderson might switch to six although he may not want to go against Mackenzie.

If Mandel does not run expect to see Krushell, Iveson, and maybe Diotte all run.

^ Yes, I met him a few weeks back and it does sound like he will run in Ward 7

I heard that Tony Caterina may consider a run at the big chair as well.

No word from Scott McKeen ? He was punished for trying to run in a riding he did not live in last time...

Here's hoping Caterina runs for mayor! I don't think his support base extends much out of his ward and we could finally be rid of him.

    Default Ward 5

I have heard rumblings that Karen Leibovici may be running for mayor. That leaves Ward 5 completely open.

With that being said, what are some of the major issues plaguing Ward 5, if any?

Shouts to Dave Dowling. That guy is cool as hell

I hope TonCat doesnt run again. If he does take a stab at the mayors chair look out - I think hed have a decent shot. There is a lot of Edmontonians who think like TonCat.

I seen that Colburn is running in Ward 7. Not that I dont like him, but its a damn shame. I think Brendan is a good fit for Ward 7 and this will only split the vote allowing TonCat to capitalize as he did last election. Except instead of Colburn he split the vote with McKeen.

As far as I'm concerned, Dowling replaced Buffalo Terminator as the perrenial joke candidate.

Kim Krushell haven't said, if she will run as a councillor but if she runs for a Mayor, she might have a good shot winning the mayor chair , in case if Mandel retired as a Mayor.

Default I'm taking on Tony Caterina in Ward 7.

I met with Brendan Van Alstine a while ago and he told me he isn't running. I announced that I am on April 6th. That makes two of us. Caterina can't vote for himself (he doesn't live in Ward 7 so I'm not sure if that's a viable excuse for Scott McKeen's lack of success last time, by the way) so I think I'm winning 1-0.

    Here's the post-announcement media release:

I also live in Ward 7. I'd to like to hear Mimi's position on other topics other than the arena before I can form an opinion on her. When I do hear more, I hope I like what I hear because I really don't want to have to vote for Caterina.

^ Likewise and agreed. However I am fully expecting Mandel to announce he won't be running again. With the arena deal now signed in blood, having already spent 9 years and 3 terms as Mayor, and is now a senior citizen and a new grandfather, I wouldn't blame him for wanting to retire. I suppose his decision will depend on if he feels he's accomplished what he's set out to do and that his vision will continue to be carried out, and there's no danger of the undoing of his accomplishments.

He could very well be throwing his support behind someone else, and lobbing an early grenade while he can. Right now with Kerry being the only candidate any and all qualified remarks could carry a lot of weight.

I'm sure Mandel's comments were all the more vitriolic given the timing of Diotte's announcement -- stole a little bit of Steve's thunder from his own announcement tomorrow.

Yes he has, because he knows that such a move would cost the city a lot of money if the City were to back out of it now. Although this should come as sad news to many of his Wildrose supporters.

Mayor Diotte would be a disaster potentially on the same scale as Rob Ford in Toronto (wouldn't be THAT bad though).

The only time he actually did anything on Council was when he bitched about the bike lanes because one of the routes took away the parking in front of his house, or complained about any sort of city spending that didn't involve roads.

    According to http://daveberta.ca/

The gaggle of Wildrose Opposition Caucus staffers standing at the back of the press conference may give an indication as to how the one-term Councillor plans to build a city-wide political campaign. With the Wildrose Party looking to gain an organizational toe-hold in major Alberta’s cities before the next election, it is easy to understand why their organizers would gravitate toward Councillor Diotte.

They meddled last time, and are meddling again. Not surprised in the least...

So we can count on a couple of bozo eruptions to sink Diotte's campaign?

The hard fact is that voter turnout for muni elections is so low that the best thing you can do is get 10 of your like minded (non Kerri supporting) friends and ensure they vote. OR --- make sure you volunteer to DRIVE people to the polling stations.

It's odd that the level of gov't that you have the most influence over, has the most direct impact on you and where your vote carries the most weight is the one that is least supported.

I hope we don't get a whole dogpile of current Councillors running for Mayor, just 1 or 2 to run against Diotte. We need most of the incumbent councillors to stay where they are to keep Mandel's long-vision going. I fear a Council dominated by the "good enoughs" again.

I hope all the "good enough" councilors run for mayor, and find themselves unemployed. One good councilor running for mayor with some quality councilors backing them would be great.

Default More candidates gearing up for Edmonton’s fall vote

"The races for city council and local school boards continue to fill out with nomination day a little more than a month away.

The crowded race continues to grow in Ward 5, where Allan Santos, a city employee, is joining a long list of hopefuls for the seat mayoral contender Karen Leibovici is vacating.

Purchasing agent and community league volunteer Ted Grand joined the race to replace Kim Krushell in Ward 2."

Default Incumbent wards in Edmonton election drawing few contenders

"While election signs will have to practically be hammered in on top of each other in some city neighbourhoods this fall, other wards seem set to have no contest at all.

Based on declared candidates to date, incumbents Ed Gibbons in Ward 4, Amarjeet Sohi in 12, Ben Henderson in 8 and Bryan Anderson in 9 won’t be facing a challenger in the coming election.

University of Alberta political scientist Jim Lightbody said he is not surprised candidates have flocked to the wards without incumbents. He said long-serving incumbents are running unchallenged because they would be very difficult to beat."
