Default No more criticism

I know that I hav already stated this in another thread, but I just want to make sure that my opinion is known to all:

I'm sick to death of other places (especially Alberta) always comparing themselves to my city, describing "what went wrong with Winnipeg". I am about to tell you fools why Edmonton may be better in some regards in comparison to Winnipeg, so listen up folks: ALBERTA HAS OIL, WHICH IS THE ONLY REASON YOU HAVE ANY MONEY AT ALL! THIS IS THE ONLY REASON YOU CAN SAY YOU HAVE IT BETTER; NOTHING ELSE. If you didn't have all the money to worry about how you compare to other major centers, then maybe you wouldn't be as critical as you are. Alberta atvantage? More like Alberta Arrogance to me! Winnipeg is getting better, believe me, it's just that we don't have all the money you people do to throw around and make yourselve look good, so it takes us a little longer to get things done. THAT'S ALL. GET OVER YOURSELVES. Compare yourselves to yourselves and no one else. I've been to Edmonton, and it is nothing spectacular. 20 years ago, Alberta was a respectable place where people were welcoming to others and not as judgemental; not anymore. Money equals greed, and Alberta is a prime example of this. Quite disgusting. Plus, all your oil boom crap is spewing pollution our way; even more 'hot air' that the rest of Canada has to put up with from Alberta. Your province is destroying it's own natural beauty and will soon end up looking like one giant moonscape. And when the oil runs out, and it will, all you people will have to go crawling back to where you came from because then it won't be as "cool" to live in Alberta. I can single handedly pick Edmonton and Alberta apart for all it's flaws, but then again, I don't want to sink to the level of Albertans. Don't judge others unless you want to be judged in return. I hope Winnipeggers, and Manitobans for that matter, never become like you people. I would rather be dead than to sound like an arrogant Albertan. I hope that province will one day wake up and realize we are a country, and we should all be proud to be Canadians and quite critisizing others.

ps: I am not a *****, but just someone who is standing up for his city, like you all do for yours.

Get over it.

Let me get this straight...

"Don't diss my city, because I hate you all."

Either you have a beautiful grasp of irony, or is that a plank I see in your eye?

Rant on!

this forum is for the improvement of edmonton. people here look at other places to take from what works and to avoid what doesn't. as there are a lot of people here with roots in Winnipeg, as well as many other places, Winnipeg comes up at times. If you actually read the posts that had a reference to that city, the posts mostly compared the inadequacies and similarities of both Edmonton and Winnipeg. These posts are just as critical of edmonton as of winnipeg. Neither is a perfect city. Since Winnipeg is older than Edmonton and a city of roughly the same size and roughly similar climate etc. it is the best for us to draw from in terms of ideas and things to avoid. we are just too similar to ignore. you rant is misguided. stop making an *** of yourself and help us by sharing some positive things about Winnipeg that could work here for us to learn from. As far as the oil boom goes, Edmonton has benefitted from it in terms of jobs and investments. However, our largest employer is still the UofA. We are more about research, development and diverse economy than you think.

Oh, Murman:

You just don't get it do you. Your comparison is an insult to my city. I know that Winnipeg is by no means perfect, but I tell you this; when I think of ways of improving Winnipeg, I don't go around belittleing other places. But when someone forces my city into a corner, I will defend it. This will be an ongoing battle of words I"m sure; but in all honesty, why can't we all just get along without the insults towards one another? No place is perfect. END OF STORY. Believe me, I only get mad when people dis me and where I come from. I'm sure you would do the same. Anytime someone slams Winnipeg on this forum, I will be in their face, as I am loyal to my city.

ps:

I DO NOT hate your fair city; I just can't stand the insulance that comes from it and your province.

after school, monkey bars... oh wait, that is what was said when I went to grade 4.

start contributing to the improvement of edmonton. that is what this space is for. we will look everywhere for good and for bad. you have some positive stories of success to share with us such as the bit on the film industry--please share. we are willing to learn to make our city better. in our debate, we will not be sensored by overly sensitive people who don't quite read the posts as they appear.

I think you are being over sensitive. I lived in Calgary for a number of years and the put downs and the plane just viscous snide remarks I got from people when I told them I was from Edmonton was just unbelievable. They seem to think that Edmonton is fair game for any and every put down they can think of. They would never think of being as mean to anyone else. They do try to pass themselves off as good old friendly cowpokes. The hypocrisy is laughable. But you know what? We try our hardest to ignor their remarks rather than stew over them. I would suggest you do the same.

I have heard about the East Jasper revitalization plans for your downtown; they seem interesting. Apart from this, I have no knowledge on what is happening in your improvement projects.

I can speak for winnipeg, however:

There are currently 8 new waterfront condominium developments along the red river in place, and many other condominium developments that are underway in the exchange district, which is a National Historic Area. The new MTS centre has brough the same top venue concerts that Edmonton has seen in the past year; it is now the third busiest venue centre in Canada, behind only Toronto and Montreal. A new office skyscraper is being built on Portage Ave, bringing in more people to the downtown core; there will soon be new highrise apartments and condominiums that will be built downtown, again bringing in more people downtown; chinatown is expanding and creating more services for the local chinese community. We have so many summer festivals; the fringe, and ours is the second largest in canada, behind only edmonton's I have to admit, folkfest, internationally renoun; the largest multicultural festival in the world, folklorama; we are close to one of the top 10 fresh water beaches in north america, and the list goes on. In terms of the film industry, there have been several films that have filmed all or some of their movies in Winnipeg: jessie james, capote, shall we dance just to name a few, and there is a successful canadian series being filmed up in Winnipeg Beach called Falcon Beach. This is why I am proud of Winnipeg, like you are proud of what Edmonton is striving to achieve. We all have pride in our own cities. This is what I am trying to say.

yes, we are similar. with the exception of the fresh water bit (as far as nature goes--we have the mountains near) and we are still waiting for a new office tower downtown, most of the same things are happening here in Edmonton. High rise condo's are popping up in and around downtown and along the river valley. we have much of the same types of festivals. i heard restaurants in Winnepeg are great. Edmonton's are also really good. The arts scene--I hear Winnipeg is home to some of Canada's best theatre. Edmonton has a very strong history in that as well. We also have our run-down, dead spots that need to be fixed. Perhaps you can pass along some of the choices your city council is making in improving Winnipeg. It will help the people on this cite out as we dream of making edmonton better and we argue for or against ideas as they arise.

And with that, this thread is locked. I think PTBM made his/her points. So, before this becomes a flame war...
