Default 3 Canadian cities among top 75 commerce centres: MasterCard

Canwest News Service
Published: Monday, June 09, 2008
OTTAWA - Three Canadian cities made MasterCard Worldwide's second annual rankings of the 75 urban centres most influential to the global economy. All Canadian locations, however, saw their "worldwide centres of commerce index" rankings decline from a year earlier, with the credit-card company citing the emergence of cities in Asia and eastern Europe as a key trend.

Toronto was the top-ranking Canadian city at 13th, down one spot from last year. Montreal was 32nd, down five spots. At No. 37, Vancouver was down nine notches from 2007's rankings.
Vancouver did, however, rank first overall in the new subcategory of livability. And all three of the ranked Canadian cities made the top 10 in the category of "ease of doing business" - Toronto fourth, Vancouver eighth and Montreal ninth.

The top three overall rankings of cities judged to drive the global economy remained identical to last year's survey - London, New York and Tokyo, in that order. Los Angeles was knocked down to 17th from 10th, leaving New York and fifth-place Chicago as the only North American cities in the top 10. Shanghai, China, was the biggest upward mover in the survey, jumping eight spots to 24th.

The rankings were based on research conducted by a team of economic, urban development and social science experts.
Most economically influential cities in the world:

1) London

2) New York

3) Tokyo

4) Singapore

5) Chicago

6) Hong Kong

7) Paris

Frankfurt

9) Seoul

10) Amsterdam

13) Toronto

32) Montreal

37) Vancouver

Yay! Sydney bumps out Toronto for 12th. It is a reality check for the "Who can make the lamest comment about being a world class city competition" thats goes on between Edmonton and Calgary.
