| Air/Rail Links Edmonton continues to improve its ranking as a major transportation hub for northern Canada and beyond. New air routes, more cargo, Port Alberta, a major rail operations centre and the related infrastructure are all part of this increasingly critical component of the region’s economic growth. When it comes to High Speed Rail, the province bought land for a train station in downtown Calgary, and has a couple of options for a station in downtown Edmonton (109 Street or the new Royal Alberta Museum).
If Edmonton and Calgary can have only one suburban station, where should those suburban stations go? Where should the station for Red Deer go? Last edited by Cod Father; 18-09-2012 at 12:25 AM.. |

It makes sense that this station should be downtown because it needs to be in a commercially developed area. Government Centre doesn't have that.

i've posted previously that a good location could be at the foot of Shaw Conference Center. Access over a rail-capable new bridge.
Museum location is also fine.

Foot of the Shaw CC? What route out of the river valley do you see from there, Grish? Some pretty steep gradients for a train would be involved.

^ back over the same bridge on the way to calgary... if there is ever a time to go north, then go under 97th or similar to get to LRT ROW to NE.
ps By foot of Shaw I mean mid-bank somewhere in that vicinity. I do think that Shaw CC actually feels almost like a train station and there is a possibility to provide for LRT connections from there.

I really like the way Oslo's train station is downtown and connected right into their Arts district and Tourism area. I think Edmonton would be wise to do this as well, it creates more buzz.

A stupid poll. The only DT stations needed are for LRT.

sure, and where else will the train travel through to get to the single spot you've isolated? I can selectively pick out a strand of trees a few meters of from the shot you've linked to....

Only one suburban station? Probably the airports. Only one suburban station? Probably the airports.
For Edmonton, if there was a second suburban station: the route would probably follow the CPR ROW which intersects no high density areas or LRT routes. So I'd say at South Edmonton Common, Whitemud, or Whyte Ave.or Edmonton, if there was a second suburban station: the route would probably follow the CPR ROW which intersects no high density areas or LRT routes. So I'd say at South Edmonton Common, or possibly at Whitemud or Whyte Ave. |

Well I still think it should be in the arts district. 97th Street. As for the possibility of going further north - Ft. McMurray is always going to be looking for faster, more reliable and less expensive means of travel to and from. And that could be routed up the NE rail line into Ft. Saskatchewan.

I think if the train station is down on 97 Street, the suburban stop should be out by the Sherwood Park Freeway.
If the traing station is down on 109 Street, the sububan stop should be Heritage Valley, say 41 Ave SW, where, it can interface with the LRT at the south end of the city. Then the LRT can carry on right out to YEG. |

well considering that you haven't exactly shown how your HSR will get to your proposed HSR station, its pretty hard to point out trees in the river valley you will be affecting by your pet-routing. Perhaps you can do that (show us your intended routing) , that is, once you tire of showing us that there are trees in other parts of the valley. I'm pretty sure there's trees throughout the valley, but I'll let you find that conclusion with further study. Go get em!

I thought it was already decided it is going in the RAM location, it is supposed to be incorporated into the design (presumably as a future component to be built).
