Default Mayor Mandel about to announce a major concert?

http://blogs.edmontonjournal.com/201...ton-this-fall/

Quote:
there’s word of “a major historical concert event scheduled for Rexall Place,” according to an email sent by Live Nation.

The concert will be revealed at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 7 during a news conference at Rexall Place with Mayor Stephen Mandel.

Who/what could it be? Paul McCartney, Rolling Stones, Radiohead and Jesus are some of the theories thrown about on Twitter.

My colleague at the Vancouver Sun, Francois Marchand, says he received a similar email — and Songkick.com is listing a Paul McCartney gig for Nov. 25 at B.C. Place in the coastal city.

(Keep in mind, Songkick is the same site that said Skrillex’s Full Flex Express was going to be held in Edson, not Edmonton, after politicians from St. Albert turned the tour down.)

McCartney has never played Edmonton on his own or with Wings or The Beatles … so he would fulfil both the “major” and “historical” parts of the concert announcement.
I dunno...regardless of who it is, am I the only one who thinks the mayor of your city announcing a concert is the type of small-town thing that Edmonton should have outgrown by now?

If it is McCartney, should be good for Beatles fans.

His voice really sucks now though (unlike, for example, Elton John).

I rather see that than Paul McCartney, imo, he was the worst Beatle and is grossly overrated.

Assuming he's the real McCartney...the real one died in 1967!

After all the bad blood that's been generated over the new arena, for Mandel to share the podium with the Northlands folks means the concert announcement has to be a really big deal.

Could it be Bruce Springsteen and Sir Paul McCartney playing Rexall Place? From poking around the internet, it appears the two artists are doing a joint North American tour this fall.

Further research suggests Springsteen and McCartney aren't exactly doing a joint tour this fall. However, they have appeared together in concert as recently as this July in Hyde Park. And if we promise not to pull the plug before the concert ends, that might be a selling point.

Mandel is pragmatic, subdued and intelligent; he is not the type to glamourize concert. Something big would be like landing or convincing a major company to return back to edmonton as head quarter and a tower to go with....

The only thing that would make a Stones Edmonton gig historical is the fact that it's their 50th anniversary this year, and that any shows to mark the occasion may even include them reuniting with former members Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor. Otherwise they played here twice during the 90s.

Maybe they are going to prop up Ozzy or reunite Kiss.

I'm thinking this has to be some big ticket concert being used as a fundraiser for a city project.

Performing Arts Centre maybe?

Seems like a pretty big deal. Clearly not just another big name tour. I have a feeling that something is going on here. Maybe a one-off show with a percentage of proceeds going to the new Performing Arts Centre? Why else would the Mayor and the CEO of Northlands be involved? Maybe Northlands is going to be in charge of booking the new venue as a consolation for not getting the arena...

EDMONTON - Ticketmaster’s website lists Paul McCartney coming to Edmonton on Wednesday, Nov. 28, ending about 50 years of waiting for local fans.

The former Beatle will perform as part of his latest series of On The Run tour dates across the U.S. and Canada.

Tickets will go on sale Sept. 14 at Ticketmaster.

The city has been abuzz with speculation since Northlands and tour promoter Live Nation issued a news release Thursday about a “major historical concert event” to be announced Friday.

When using those words, only McCartney truly applies, though Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Radiohead and the Rolling Stones were other hot theories tossed around on social media sites and local radio and TV shows.

The Beatles played their first gigs in 1960; released their first single, Love Me Do, in 1962; and made their first trip to North America in 1964.

McCartney has released dozens of albums since The Beatles announced their breakup in 1970, both with Wings, his much-maligned ‘70s band, and under his own name.

*shrug* I'd consider a few nosebleeds at that price, but of course they'll sell out in a heartbeat and I'm not going to do the lineup or website thrash.

Srsly, kudos for actual cheap seats. I'm impressed.

Missed opportunity, and far too much build-up.

Don't get me wrong, this is a huge deal. I just don't know if it warranted the Mayor being there and whipping the town into a frenzy.

I was expecting more simply because he was there. You were right.

To be honest I was thinking it was going to be something along the lines of the Bridge School Benefit that Neil Young does annually. Edmonton could really use a high-profile benefit concert for one of the many worthy charities here in town.

Oh well.

On the other hand, EEDC or EIA should hire whoever brought Macca to town:

Quote:
Live Nation said the announcement was the product of years or work promoting the city to Paul McCartney’s group.

“It was a three-year process to build it to this point, Barry Marshall from Paul’s camp was in town about a month ago,” Geoff Robins with Live Nation said. “[He] toured the city, [he] toured the building, then about a week after that we confirmed the show, he was so impressed.”

Only 4 NA shows?

Ok yeah this is a much bigger deal than most people think. Shame it wasn't in the summer and held at Commonwealth.

Too bad the concert will "Sell Out" in 3 and a half seconds, but you will be able to get tickets on THE Ticketmaster resell site. $37 ticket resells for $500.

I think you're right about this being bigger than I thought. It's a big deal in Vancouver as well. Although they had one prior visit from him when the Beatles played there in 1964.

Should be intersting to see how fast tickets sell, in the blink of an eye no doubt. Hopefully they have 2 concerts. I should imagine there will be a lot of out of towners wanting tickets. McCartney, I have heard, does great concerts in spite of not doing to well at the Olympics or the Queens big bash.

The first pre-order sales for fan club members and Oilers gold season ticket holders have already occurred.

There are also VIP ticket packages being sold directly to the public on the ticketmaster website right now for between $450-$2000 per ticket for those premium seats. I think they sold out the VIP seats that initially went on sale (might be a few singles on the $1500 priced tickets) but it's pretty common for Ticketmaster to hold some VIP seats back for later release when it's a pre-order day.

There is a pre-order happening Thursday at 10am which requires a password or by using the livenation mobile app on Apple IOS devices or Android devices. That password was already sent out to livenation newsletter subscribers and their facebook fans. Many thousands of people will have that password so these pre-order tickets on Thursday should sell out in the first 10 seconds. It's just a matter of how fast you can get through the scrambled word captcha and grab a seat.

The full public sales will be on Friday and thats when the bulk of seats are released. The pre-orders would only be a limited release of tickets. Usually only a few rows or blocks in each section are opened to a pre-order release.

For a fan club pre-order those will usually be good seats available but not EVERY good seat and not any of the VIP priced rows.

So what I'm seeing is that The first 8 rows on the floor are all VIP premium priced tickets. The first few rows of seats in the side sections right beside the stage are also in the Silver class of the VIP ticket sales for $450.

Fan club saw the release of a few rows of seats on the Floor, the front rows of the side sections, and front rows of the upper levels at the slightly lowered price levels. So each time the price goes down the fan club had access to the nearest row of tickets at the lowered price bands. So the first row of seats on the balcony. Then the first row of seats after the price goes down again half way up the second level, then the first row of seats again in the cheapest 300 level seats.

Fan clubs are often a good method of securing a ticket to a favourite band depending on how they do things.

So a few tips for those looking for tickets.
Try Thursday morning for a pre-sale seat if you have the password from the livenation newsletter that was already sent to subscribers. A few seconds after 10am you can refresh the ticketmaster page for the event and there will be a new box to pick the number of tickets and enter the presale password. As quickly as possible solve the blurry word puzzle and cross your fingers. If it shows you no tickets on your first attempt keep trying a few more times over the next 15 minutes or so. Sometimes people will get a set of tickets but not follow through with the checkout and those seats will be returned into the pool to be bought. I have gotten seats for big events where the initial try resulted in terrible seats or no available seats and then 5 minutes later I try again and get something decent.

If you don't have the password for pre-order then just try on Friday at 10am. Same suggestions apply.

If you strike out and are willing to pay a bit more then go ahead with resale market tickets like Stubhub or Fanxchange. (Those two are pretty safe with their guarantees but have fees for the seller and buyer that inflates the cost further)
Reselling tickets over face value is no longer illegal in Alberta since they repealed the amusements act in 2009. So don't go making that argument anymore (call it wrong but don't call it illegal).

Kijiji, and the paper will likely have a bunch for sale but it's buyer beware on those. There is no absolute proof of a legitimate ticket you can ask for but there are some things you can do to lower your risk of getting a fake ticket. Some people avoid the electronic PDF file tickets but they don't seem to be as bad as you would assume. Sure it's easy to make multiple printouts and sell the same ticket. I would insist on having the person log into their ticketmaster accounts for you to download the ticket and send it to you. Make note of the barcode numbers match what is on the online version if the tickets are already printed for you. Get solid contact details for the seller, maybe even see ID. Take a photo of the seller even and write down all their contact info in case of a problem. Ask them what they would do in case the tickets are refused at the door or the event is cancelled. Most people aren't crooks but you need to watch out.
I believe it's actually more common to be struck with fake tickets that are the more traditional "hard" tickets that some people assume are safer than the ticketfast version. I think more people are taken with hard tickets because they do not ask for as much proof as a person buying the ticketfast version would insist on. Scammers will use that.

I know a few things for sure.
This concert will Sell out fast, a few minutes at the most. Ticketmaster will likely claim it sold in like 30 seconds or something but I'm not sure how they account for when a ticket gets held by someone then times out and returns back to the pool for sale. I think they just ignore that and count down to the first point when every ticket is held in some cart for checkout and call that the time to sell out. Obviously those times when they claim a 45 second sell out didn't mean everyone entered their credit card details in less than a minute. So the actual sale doesn't yet exist until the payment details have been finalized and the tickets are through the checkout process. But it sounds way more impressive to say the concert sold out in under a minute. In actual fact if you wait for all the little timers to nearly expire before you submit it can take 15-20 minutes. They might even extend that timer over and over if you submit the order with missing details that it forces you to fill in though I don't think they are that gracious.

Well, hopefully my tips help someone get a seat. Enjoy the show.

And to everyone who wants to complain about ticketmaster, scalpers, the cost of tickets and VIP packages. Well we don't exactly live in a perfect world. But nobody will really suffer by missing a concert. Plenty of live entertainment in this city and most of it is much much cheaper than the $270 the face value + fees these tickets will cost you.

Then again, up to this point if you wanted to see Paul in concert it would have involved some expensive plane tickets and hotel rooms so maybe the VIP packages are actually cheap in comparison to that.

I watched the McCartney concert that played in New York last night or at least part of it. It wasn't good. Lots of flashing lights and not much talent. The guy is getting a bit long in the tooth and seems propped up with studio muscians and pyro. I think I'll stick to the albums rather than spoil my good feelings about this chap and the bands he played in. p.s.I also watched the tribute to Paul earlier this week and it was excellent.

The attendence of 2 Edmonton shows still does not equal the attendance of the one Houston show, or the single Vancouver show.

This is great news though.

If I were a fan, I'd want the chance to be closer at one of two arena shows than stuck at the back of BC Place. If this were a summer tour, I'd bet it would be at Commonwealth.

I completely agree. The Edmonton shows are probably the smallest shows he's done in years.

Love the Abbey Road crosswalk idea!

^Geez, what over kill. It's not the second coming of Christ (is it). It's nice the guys coming and all that but this is OTT. What other celebrity has had this kind of treatment. I'm surprised they are not renting the Pope mobil to hurl him around town in. He is just one of the Beatles as unfortunatley the two talented ones are no longer with us and the other is not much for the spotlight. If it was the whole Fab Four I could maybe understand the hoop la. Hopefully word does not get out to other 'stars' because surely we will not be given them all the same treatment.

Come Together: Edmonton's Celebration of Paul McCartney

Wednesday November 28
11:30am to 12:45pm
City Room, City Hall
No, Paul McCartney will not be in City Hall, but that doesn't mean we can't generate some 'Beatlemania' of our own!
The City Room will come alive with roving performers who will welcome audience members with their delightful style of British humour and improvised entertainment. Hear Mayor Stephen Mandel make an official proclamation in honour of McCartney's first visit to Edmonton.
Enjoy a performance by Pepperland – Edmonton's own Beatles tribute band. Then gather around the grand piano and take part in an old-fashioned sing-a-long from the Paul McCartney song book.
One can only imagine how horrific a spectacle this will be. I quite literally cringe at the thought.

(Coincidentally, I wouldn't hold out much hope for the concerts either, did no one see the Olympic performance, poor chap's well past his prime?)

^^True, it's not the second coming of Christ. It's much better than that.

Paul McCartney is arguably the greatest pop music performer in history. The Olympics performance was great, but the sound wasn't.

And this sounds like a lot of fun.

I wish they hired The Shivers to play Beatles songs though. An excellent band.

^At the Neil Diamond concert they had one of those live Twitter feeds playing on the screens beside the stage. My favorite tweet was something like: "I'm 23 and I'm here with my Mom because I love her."

Well, I am going to think positive about it, not be such a grinch. Afterall, it is harmless fun and it more than likely did not cost the city an arm and leg to host. More of this Less of this.

^In a similar vein, at the Leonard Cohen concert on Sunday night, Mark Connelly (CBC was sponsoring the concert) got a lot of laughs when he said "I just got a text from my son and it says - Dad, I'm just coming home from work and the LRT is like baby boomer central."

Though truth be told there were some younger folks (maybe 10% of the audience) at the Cohen concert (which BTW was fabulous).

I guess I'm a party pooper folks but this is a bit overboard and screams out 'small town' to me. It's like we're announcing that we've finally hit the big time by getting a famous entertainer way up to our burg so let's throw a party. We may as well have had Keith Richards day in 1994 ... imagine the fun? Kind of like Halloween, we could have held a costume contest. And speaking of big names, wasn't Bob Dylan just here? I wonder if Grande Prairie had Elton John day when he played there a couple of years ago?

Just my $0.02 (also echoed by other people I know)

Agree 100%. It does seem small town. Woo hoo. A washed up rocker is coming to town!! Lets throw a day of celebration.

We didnt have a day of celebration when Jay Z was in town. A musical artist who is far more relevant to todays society and just as accomplished.

Sorry my friend. Not even close.

I know you're pretty young, but there is no comparison between Paul McCartney/The Beatles and Jay Z. And that's not to disparage Jay Z (though it could be argued Jay Z is washed up now).

Paul McCartney is the most successful songwriter in the history of popular music, by a long shot. How many of Jay Z's "compositions" will still be popular in 40 years? How many Jay Z "songs" can most people "sing" along to, compared to Sir Paul/The Beatles?

Frankly, I'd bet The Beatles are bigger NOW than Jay Z is. And it's nearly 50 years since they hit big.

I'm not going to debate McCartney's track record, I'm a GenX/Boomer (1965) who plays music and love a lot of the Beatles stuff, think 'Wings Over America' is one of the best concert videos of it's era ('Maybe I'm Amazed' still stops me dead in my tracks) ... but don't think Edmonton needs to overdo him coming here, albeit he is a huge name. And most under-40's I know couldn't care less.

Plus, I couldn't get a ticket and am ****** at how the ticket sales were setup

I think they're just having fun with it. There's no bigger musical star than Paul McCartney. He's like royalty.

"Let’s not kid ourselves, the Beatles were the biggest band on the planet, period. If you disagree just let the stats below do the talking. Over 2 billion albums sold! Come on! How many people have sold 2 billion of anything let alone recorded music? Their recording studio may as well have been a money printing mint."

There are LOTS of under 40's who are into The Beatles. Including just about every musician and songwriter I know. I worked briefly with a great Beatles tribute band a few years ago. Lots of people from a range of generations are crazy about The Beatles. And there are quite a few that are, literally, crazy about The Beatles.

Again, I'm not denying the facts you've laid out, I think it's fantastic you know a lot of younger people who love the Beatles (I don't understand how any serious musician of any generation wouldn't appreciate their mid-late 60's stuff) ... but it just screams 'hick' to me, even if the intent is for fun or whatever. If a younger person were mayor today (GenX or younger), and not Mandel, I doubt this would be happening.

Maybe I'm being too uptight but I think Edmonton gets a little over-excitable and over the top with stuff like this and in the end comes across as, well, small town.

Party pooper that I am ...

We could have all dressed up and used makeup to look just like Keith Richards...

...in other words, we would have hosted the first zombie walk

To be fair, there's also a big to-do in Vancouver over McCartney's appearance there. For example, GM Place has been lit up as a Union Jack in his honor.

I'd consider Bob Dylan, Elton John, or Mick Jagger similar. Elton John and Mick can still perform and sing though. McCartney is horrible right now, almost as bad Dylan. Sure McCartney was once a great songwriter (IMO a bit too popcorn, Lennon was better), and could harmonize well, but that's long gone.

Oh well, if it makes the boomers happy...

Could harmonize well? Jeez, whadayagottado to get respect? Whether or not you or I like him, I don't think you fully appreciate just how big The Beatles were, and are. I know 5 year-olds that love The Beatles.

Dump on, or dismiss, "the boomers" all you want, they still make up the largest demographic.

As big as Dylan, Elton (the only one of them even in the conversation), and Mick are, I'd bet McCartney is bigger than all of them, put together. And you can throw U2 in there as well. And they've all been here before.

He's no Justin Bieber, but McCartney is still a great performer.

Even if you are not a Beatles fan (I'm not a huge fan but I like some songs), their massive impact on culture cannot be denied. If anyone from the past few generations will be remembered for the next several centuries as cultural titans of human history on the same level as Shakespeare and Mozart, it will be the Beatles, Elvis Presley and maybe Michael Jackson.

It's very funny when David Letterman says 'Show a picture of Paul McCartney' and they show a picture of Angela Lansbury.

Pretty much dead on. I don't really want to include MJ on that list, but he probably does belong.

Everything I've heard about last night's show in Vancouver has been positive.

Also, 40 song setlist. I need to somehow get my hands on tickets for this.

Yeah I'm pretty choked about probably missing this show. I still regret not going to see the White Stripes when they were here. I'm sure I'll regret missing this show for a long long time.

oh, and just for the record, I'm 28 and approximately 20 of my close friends/acquaintances are going to this show (some actually went to Vancouver and will also be going here). So don't give me that "nobody under 40 will go" nonsense. It's not your thing, and I get that. Consider yourself in the minority.

I love how they put memorabilia in City Hall, did that Abbey Road, phone booths, bobs, showing the film and the British Beer night.

Why not.

That must have been mighty cold on the feet for Councillor Henderson. That's worth a vote right there!

Even if tickets for tomorrow's show have magically become available, still won't be able to make it. Will have to be content with playing "Helter Skelter", "Band on the Run" and "Dance Tonight" on YouTube.

Just like when the shows were first announced, I can't even get any results on Ticketmaster.

Grrrr.

Last night I was watching the live tweets and everyone saying how great the concert was. Then I got thinking that sometimes Ticketmaster releases more tickets just before a concert. Anyway, went on Ticketmaster and got two tickets. If you do get on to Ticketmaster don't enter a price you want to pay. Just let them find you a ticket and see what price it is. That is if they have any left. You don't know unless you try.

Try kiiji, could be some on sale there but as you know, it's buyer beware.

They release tickets once the stage is set up and they can see what the sightlines are. And I think they also might release tickets that were held for VIP's, friends and family and the like that don't get used. Chances are, most of the tickets released will be up high on either side of the stage.

CTV just did a story on the Edmonton Police Pipes & Drums Band playing this song with Macca last night and maybe tonight.

Wow, he did not dissapoint. The EPS bagpipes were awesome and dispite what people are saying, there is nothing wrong with Sir Paul's pipes. If you could discribe it in one word it would be 'Magical'.

I'm sooooo glad I was able to score a ticket. Magical, for sure. One to cross off the bucket list. DJ Dave Stone said it best - these songs are part of our DNA.

And Paul sings his butt off. 3 hours, two nights in a row, and he sings every song. At any age, that's astounding.
