Default Metallica concert

anyone go to the show last night? My sister went, and said there was some kind of accident where a grip/light person fell from the rafters onto the stage

I didn't hear of anything and there's no reports of injury in the media, so I dunno...

Metallica is a steaming pile of has-been. I love Metallica, but they're terrible now. I feel bad for the younger fans that pony up big money to see them only to find out what they love from the records can't be done on stage anymore, mostly because James has lost is throaty voice. Add in the fact they haven't put out a good record in almost 20 years and you have yourself a band that needs to pack it in before they embarrass themselves further.

^ The majority of rock bands don't have the good sense of knowing when to pack it in. see: Olympics closing ceremony, see: classic rock festival at Hawrelak Park.

I'm trying to pinpoint when Metallica jumped the shark. Napster debacle? The black album? The death of Cliff Burton?

I watched a documentary of the evolution of metal, and they had interviewed Metallica. They stated that they changed their style of music, because of how some other metal was shifting during the late 80's, early 90's (The black album), and they didn't want to be left out of the movement I guess.

Since selling-out, its been a downhill slide.

Sometime around 15 years ago when James lost the ability to sing in his trusted "Metallica" voice. The albums coming out around then weren't very good, but a band really needs to quit when their live product can't match their recorded product. Some folks haven't put out a decent album in decades but still nail the live performance (Axl Rose is a great example).

The Black Album.

'And Justice For All' was their last decent album before they sold out.

I was in the snakepit last night. The "accident" was part of the show. This coincided with the "collapse" of the support beams and was a segue to the closing portion of the show , a reversion to the garage band of their roots. A questionable piece of performance art from my mature sensibilities. A pretty spectacular and high energy show otherwise.

Even great metal bands succumb to the corporate world.

Master of Puppets is the last Metallica album I like. Justice is OK, but the production was terrible.

I'm not into what they're doing now, but people are still buying their albums, the concerts are selling out, and I've heard from a few friends who were at the shows and loved them. All the power to James, Lars et al, if they're still doing what they love.

Master of Puppets was their best. And Justice was their first with a big label backing them. It took the 'dirt' away from their sound and cleaned them up too much in the mix.

I like to quote this line often:

Old Metallica > Megadeth > New Metallica

Metallica should invite Mustaine to help them write their final album. Start and finish on a high note.

Don't forget that Cliff Burton died between MoP and Justice. I know many older fans who say the band and their music hasn't been the same without him.

heh, have you heard the idiocy constantly falling out of Mustaine's mouth lately? Given the huge platform, it might be kind of interesting to see what he'd write, in a plane crash kind of way. I think he's going senile or something, it's bizarre.

80s Metallica is some of the best heavy metal ever recorded. Those 4 albums are classics for every sensible metalhead.

The Black album is a good radio-friendly hard rock classic. Everything after that is above average hard rock and sub-par metal.

When Metallica started doing Bob Seger covers it was the nail in the coffin for their heavy metal greatness.

Well, the old Mustaine...when he was cranking every known drug to mankind. After Rust in Peace, unfortunately Mustaine suffered the same craptacular fate of Hetfield.

I'll be the first to admit that I love my music full of heroin. That's the problem with all these sleepy indie bands - they need more crack.

You should probably look into Animal Collective. I don't actually know if they're on drugs, but if they aren't, I'd be surprised. Totally the opposite of the music being discussed here though.
