Default Japan tsunami debris

A CBC interview today mentioned that some of the people in Alaska are trying to raise awareness of the debris floating to North America.

Think of households alone with thousands upon thousands of containers with pesticides (stuff like rat poisons), herbicides, paints, solvents, you name it floating around in slowly degrading containers. If I look at the chemicals in my own house, there are a lot of partially full containers that would likely float. Out of Japan; industrial, commercial, residential supplies, everything that didn't get battered open, buried or sank, I imagine floated towards some other shore somewhere.

I'd guess a huge amount of stock from paint and chemical stores, industrial storehouses, etc. were lost in a concentrated fashion, so of course Japan would be worse off than us. Inland and offshore Japan will have all the unrecovered full containers that were buried or sank nearby in the ocean. You have to wonder what little chemical time bombs will show up for decades to come.

"Millions of tonnes of debris are expected to wash up in the coming months and years from the Japanese quake. Researchers in Hawaii have developed computer models to forecast where and when it could come ashore."
