Default Global News # 1 in Edmonton

EDMONTON, January 18, 2012 – Edmontonians have made it perfectly clear: their number one choice for news is Global Edmonton. According to BBM PPM (Portable People Meter) Fall 2011 survey, all of Global Edmonton’s newscasts continue to win their timeslots – morning, noon and night in total audience and
in all key demographics including A18-49 and A25-54. Edmonton was recently added to the BBM’s electronic PPM system, providing a much better estimate of viewing habits.

I rarely watch TV news and the only reason I watch Global news is because it's in HD and CTV isn't. Oh and for Nicola too!!

Are those ratings Edmonton only? CTV usually beats them when Northern and Central Alberta are included.

Probably. If CTV ran promos saying they were "Northern Alberta's #1 News", then they wouldn't be lying. "Edmonton's #1 News" though, should go to Global.

Maybe if CTV's NEW set would be something you could actually look at more people would watch. I do believe that CTV does a better job at reporting and covering many more items, but I can't bring myself to watch it with the grainy picture and flickering images in the background. Oh and Globals personalities are way hotter. Josh is annoying.

Are you kidding me?..............Josh is way better than Nicola and her "screechy" voice and annoying giggle.......gish! She's the reason I don't watch Global.

Global having an HD set is the main reason I watch Global, that and sweet Nicola and Carole Anne Guay! Josh Klassen might be the most annoying news person on Edmonton news, can't stand him and his horrible shirts.

Vassy K does it for me She reminds of Kate Middleton. Yep, Josh K gets my vote for most annoying. Must get his shirts from the same place that Don Cherry gets his.

Wow, and here I was thinking Global was the worst news broadcaster in Edmonton...I find their reports error-ridden, vague, and actually a little bit propaganda-ish. I also hate their set.

I prefer news quality over HD, anyday. But just my perception based on my own experiences.

Except for the desk, I believe Global's set is almost entirely green screen. Mike Sobel even played that up on Halloween morning, wearing an absolutely ridiculous outfit (so much so that I gained a titch respect for him; he went out on a limb) that was partially green spandex. When they cut to the assembled ancors, Mike's limbs were nonexistent, just floating hands, torso and head. Every so often the camera rotates and you see the floor 'reflections' don't move accordingly/realistically—and no one throws a shadow.

That said, CFRN's fuzzy live feed of City Hall is underwhelming, and it always kills me to think that if someone nudged the camera left a few centimetes left you'd be seeing at a big red CBC logo.

I find Global spends the most time showing us the anchors interacting with each other; simply banter. I want minimal banter from my news reporting.

CTV local news is not in HD, but network programming is. I've seen their HD signal at a friend's house. He gets the off-air signal as he does not have satellite or cable feeds. I'm miffed because I have Bell Express-vu, and they are giving us the analog signal. I phoned Bell today to complain. Hope more people will do the same.
Word is that the local news will go HD this summer. (I hope, I hope!!)

No, they still have that annoying Josh Klassen and I'm not a fan of Daryll MacIntyre or the new look of Carrie Doll. Nicola + Carole Anne = Money for me.

Why does Josh annoy you? Because he's accurate? Because he knows his stuff? Because he gives good explanations as to what the weather is going to be like?

You puzzle me.

His personality is very annoying, I can't even stand looking at him and it seems quite few on here agree. Nicola is pretty, accurate and bubbly and love watching her and Carole Anne co-anchor. Do you have any proof that Josh is more accurate or is that just your opinion?

I saw an article somewhere that said he's very accurate, but I can't remember where I read it. I've met both Josh and Nicola. They're both really nice people. She often comes with her kids to the Tim Horton's that I go to.

I just hate how Josh says Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooddddddddddddd evening folks on the late night news. It is totally "pre-recorded" where as Global actually has people there at night to do the news. They need to know how to use their green background!!! it's so annoying when I see the green on the edge of these people. Global does it WAY better with the green background. Obviously. Seriously, All the tv stations in Edmonton has switched to HD well at least in widescreen but whats with CTV?

I love how Barry N and 24karat continue to express their ties to Global and CTV respectively!

Pretty ladies
Global - Vassy Kapelos, Nicola Crosbie, Linda Nguyen, Jennifer Crosby, Carole Anne Guay, Quinn Ohler, Laurel Clark, Nancy Carlson
CTV - Melissa Dominelli, Carrie Doll, Sonia Sunger, Erin Isfeld, Carmen Leibel, Marni Kuhlmann
Win - Global

Annoying or unlikeable personalities
Global - Mike Sobel, Daintre Christensen, Bryan Hall, Bob Layton
CTV - nobody there really annoys me that much, Dez Melenka's voice is the closest thing
Win - CTV

Local content
Global - has a chopper; seems to have reduced their local news; claims neutral opinions yet Bob Layton continues to spew out fossilized editorials
CTV - seems to have increased their local news over the past couple of years; has full-time local arts and entertainment reporter; has demonstrated a slant against public transit
Win - CTV

Morning show
Global - has the advantage of having a morning show for years; has traffic chopper; has weekend shows; see Annoying personalities and Local content
CTV - strong social media content; has news and weather scroll at bottom; weather and traffic too repetitive and require fine-tuning; no weekend show
Win - CTV, just slightly

National news
Global - Dawna Friesen is attractive but cold personality; low common denominator feel to broadcast
CTV - cougarlicious Lisa Laflamme has replaced undead Lloyd; still a quality national news show
Score - CTV

Late news
Global - full hour; Nancy
CTV - 20 or 30 minutes only; often repeats prior CTV National stories
Score - Global

I give Global the advantage in almost all those categories, Dawna Friesen is much better as well as using their chopper for news and traffic, comes down to personal preference as 99% of the content is the same. How did you forgot Su-Ling Goh

Interesting that the QUALITY of news reporting by these so-called news authorities is not even mentioned in this thread.

Instead, the comments are about how "hot" or "cold" or cute or geeky or annoying the news readers are.

No wonder the so-called main-stream media is dying a slow death.

Perhaps if viewers held these so-called news authorities accountable for actually reporting the news instead of flashing cleavage or fluttering their (fake) eyelashes, we'd all be better off.

And if you want to see scary anchors, Telus TV viewers have the Seattle stations to watch. These people ... they're so made up, so fake .... you wonder if they are some kind of mechanical facsimile.

But back to Edmonton. Are you aware that the first 10 minutes of the newscast is ALL you need to watch to get important news? There's no need to waste your time watching the whole program - the local stuff is the lead stories. All the other "news" is available online at any time you please - up to the minute - without the annoying news readers.

I still watch the news on the telly because seeing live video of the story and faces being interviewed is a vast improvement over merely reading about it, and not all of it can be found on YouTube. And despite my desire for local stories, I do appreciate being informed on what's happening in the rest of the world.

I agree with you on one thing...I appreciate a pretty face but the content and substance of the news is far more important.

No mention of Shaye Ganam? I know he can come across grumpy sometimes but that's the beauty of it. He used to be more opinionated but has mellowed out quite a bit in the last 6 months or so... someone up top must have had a word with him.

Nicola is beautiful but just a little flighty for me. I think Carole Ann Guay has filled Linda Steele's roll quite well... let's be honest them were some big shoes to fill. Gord Steinke is just plain awesome.

I been watching ITV/Global most of my life and it's the best local news in the city IMO.

I wish the NFL playoffs were over so I can watch CTV News on weekends again. Tonight's Global News was so dismal I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Only about 8 minutes of local news - the rest were canned stories from the States, and the Burns Lake mill explosion was the exact same story from yesterday.

Meanwhile, if CTV News was on, we likely would have had these stories from today that Global somehow missed:

So you admit that you are resorting to the Internet to be informed about local stories?

The only way local newsrooms can compete with the Internet is to operate a dedicated 24-hour news channel.

But as we hear from INEWS880, any such service will have a bare bones budget and hire personalities straight out of school who can barely read.

I suspect the only way to re-achieve quality local programming would be to have a locally owned station as opposed to the national conglomerates that only care about the bottom line.

But as A-Channel has recently show us, this appears to be a non-sustainable business model.

SDM, I looked again at the press release Global posted. The footnote says their numbers were based off "Edmonton EMA" numbers, which means Edmonton and North/Central Alberta. So, I was mistaken when I said their ratings were probably just for Edmonton.

Another telling sign that Global has indeed swept the ratings book is that CTV's opener no longer has the "Edmonton's #1 News" tagline on it.

Interesting...yesterday on CTV News they announced that Richard Ozero was leaving to concentrate on his beekeeping business and spend more time with his family. Now Global just announced that Ozero is going to be their new late night meteorologist.

BTW I wonder what happened to Duane English?

Duane went to CTV-Vancouver, same station as Lynda Steele.

Duane English is probably one of the worst weathermen I've ever seen on TV. It looks like he was always nervous being up there, and continually fumbled his way through.

When I worked for TELUS TV, my office was at GMCC downtown. Duane was a student in their Multimedia course. I don't think he ever went to NAIT broadcasting course.

I didn't mind Duane English. I also like Richard Ozero. Both presented the weather without making it a sideshow.

Sometimes Nicola Crosbie gets very annoying by being too hyper.

Depends... Ozero did a lot more than the weather at CTV. Maybe Global is giving him a chance to just do the weather part time therefore giving him more time for his other work?

Just get rid of Nancy Carlson on News Final. Quirky delivery, oddball cadences, too many stumbles, insincere plastic smile. Other than those 'qualities', she's fine.

Add Trish Kozicka as another good reason to watch Global. She was doing the online segment this morning in a white mini-skirt and halter top, and I had to fight the urge to lick the TV screen!
