Default Paramount Theatre/Old Edmonton Movie houses

Is this place still open? What has it become? After watching Don Rickles at the tent at river cree, I couldn't help but think there had to be a better place for stars to perform in Edmonton.

A good link to Edmontons cinema heritage

I believe a church organization still uses it for mass and events.

Not for mass. It's a protestant church group.

I heard the biggest problem with that theater is that there's next to nothing for backstage space.

Still, there should be more going on there than there is.

Well if it were used for stand up comics and public speaking events you wouldn't need backstage space anyways. I would rather see it for events like that but at least the space is still being occupied.

Seldom does Top_Dawg harbour concern over how landlords use their properties.

After all, it's their money.

As long as they comply with building code and their property tax is current - laissez faire.

But what has become of the Paramount is hard to watch.

What a absolute waste of a grande facility.

It is to weep.

not sure why it is "hard to watch" - there was/is much potential there but she is hardly "a grande facility". if you want to weep, it might be for what might have been but it shouldn't be for what never was. from an earlier post in another thread:

"The Paramount was never a live performance venue as it was never a "vaudeville" theatre. It was originally built for film - the screen is virtually right up against the back wall - so there is no back stage, no set space, no decent change rooms with access to a stage, no loading/unloading space either off of the lane or at the rear of the building for taking in equipment, no "crush" space in the lobby or proper washrooms etc.

The Edmonton Downtown Development Corporation spent a year cleaning up the space, constructing a temporary stage to try create a venue and developed plans to create a performance venue that addressed some of the above issues. EDDC had a great deal of cooperation and support from the previous owner and a grant from the Province to redo the sign and and help form Epcor to redo the the sidewalk sign inserts and hundreds of hours of volunteer time and pro bono work from firms such as Stantec.

Unfortunately, there was insufficient demand to pay the utility bills, never mind taxes or rent or renovation costs. There were always lots of excuses why the venue wouldn't work (although the Opera did hold a successful event) or why rent couldn't be paid for "our" event.

It is a "sloped floor" facility - although the slope is quite shallow not ideal for live performances - and it will be a shame to lose it because it could have been redone with enough support and enough money and they are prohibitavely expensive to replace. However, perhaps Bradley could look at his own constituency and what the Paramount really is or isn't before he asks for "strong leadership and vision" from others. It's funny how "strong leadership and vision" so often becomes an acronym for "other people's money"."
