Default Taxi fares to airport dropping?

http://www.edmontonjournal.com/news/...393/story.html

Quote:
EDMONTON — Travellers could soon get a break on the controversial cost of taxi trips from the city to the Edmonton International Airport.
Drivers and cab companies support a plan to charge the lower of the meter rate or a flat fee based on the Edmonton zone where the trip originates, Vehicle for Hire Commission vice-chair Leon Lubin said Monday.

The zone fees will be the same as the ones charged by Leduc-based Airport Cabs, which has the contract to take people from the airport into the city, he said.

HAHAHAHAHAAAA

As long as you don't take the white airport taxis.

I just watched one leave the drive with his trunk wide open.

A ride in any taxi is a gamble with safety. Cabbies in this city are reckless drivers, and half of them are on their phones all the time to boot. They could make it free, unless I'm drunk, I'll never take a cab.

I couldn't believe the ride back home we had in an airport taxi last winter. 3 in the morning, the driver was literally bouncing off of snow drifts. I had to tell him every turn to take, and even then he missed the turnoff into our neighbourhood. Then, he insisted on giving me change back and took a good 5 minutes to find it. All this after an 18 hour series of plane rides....

I wouldn't say they're wreckless. To me that's someone speeding and in general driving very aggressively. Not many cab drivers operate that way that I've seen. Instead it seems they're largely oblivious to most everything around them, including road signage/controls, other vehicles, pedestrians, and often the concept of lanes.

How about GPS based taxi meters? Fares could be calculated at the beginning of the trip, the same trip would always be the same price and the driver would never get lost.

Default Cab School

An excerpt from http://www.touruk.co.uk/london_trans...sport_taxi.htm
"London's distinctive taxis, black cabs, are as much a feature of city life as its red double-decker buses. Like the buses, black cabs are also being modernised and many are now painted other colours with advertising.

All black cab drivers must pass a stringent test known as 'The Knowledge' before they are licenced to operate a taxi. This tests their knowledge of London's streets and the quickest traffic routes.
The white Hackney Carriage licence plate of each cab is on to its back bumper and a badge showing cab's serial number is also displayed in the rear of the cab. Black cab drivers cannot drive a taxi with damaged bodywork and they tend to be one of the safest ways to to travel around London. However, they are also the most expensive.

I once pointed this out to one of the cabbies on the drive after he couldn't take a guest to where she wanted to go when he didn't know where it was.

He started going on about "I don't have GPS! How can I know where every new place is!"

After I pointed out the London test he got in a huff and drove off...maybe to the Fairmont :P
