Default New Ashtrays on Jasper Ave.

I just wanted to give a round of applause to the city for installing new ashtrays along Jasper Avenue with signs above the ashtrays reminding people that there is a $250 fine for throwing butts on the ground. On the block in front of Enterprise Square, there were maybe 6 of them in that one single block. I was very impressed. Thoughts? Comments?

I didn't notice many butts on the ground, maybe only a couple and they looked like they had been there for a while. So yea, I think they must have been used. I think it's a great start. They look cool with the lil signs overtop of them too.

Yes, I've noticed a number of these around the City and they are being used.

Yea, you really have to see them to appreciate how great they are. Definitely go take a look at Jasper Ave, especially in front of Enterprise Square and Commerce Place.

they were installing them today in front of Telus and New City. looks like there's one basically every 20 - 30 ft, which is excellent. I'd like to see these at LRT stations (outside of course), and at bus terminals as well.

I noticed them at the South Campus bus terminal. I only saw a couple, but I wasn't really looking for them at the time.

on the same note, i love the new garbage/recycling stations in the LRT stations.

We need that on jasper as well.... but obviously more enclosed.

Agreed, they're really great. This way I don't feel guilty for putting my drink can/bottle in the garbage... I can just stick it in the blue bag.

Another nice thing about these, is that it will reduce the number of folks scouraging the sidewalk looking for butts to smoke.

Put some bylaw cops around with a ticket book for littering fines. I bet they will still be busy...

Great to see this in place!

Too bad they don't have ashtrays in cars and trucks. I always see people who are "forced" into throwing their butts out the window because they have no place to put them. If only...

I haven't seen the ones on Jasper Ave, but I was impressed with the ashtrays on Whyte, and the words stenciled onto the ground pointing to the ashtrays.

Though it's likely a waste of time, could we report people in cars that toss the butts out the window? Would that be a police matter, or bylaw (I'm hoping it's not police since I wouldn't even bother them with something like this)?

The little signs should have been posted above them like they are downtown... much more effective IMO.

I would love to see this progam expanded to cover the entire downtown or at least all the bar districts.

City tells smokers where to put their butts
Last Updated: Thursday, July 9, 2009 | 2:13 PM MT
CBC News

City officials hope new ashtrays like this one will help keep cigarette butts off sidewalks. (CBC) The City of Edmonton wants smokers to keep their butts off sidewalks.

The city launched two pilot projects on Thursday that include a public education campaign and providing more street ashtrays.

Street teams, comprised of students hired for the summer, will hand out pocket ashtrays to smokers on Jasper Avenue downtown and on Whyte Avenue in Old Strathcona.

"It's part of keeping our city clean because as you all know we've had a lot of criticism about the litter on the streets … cigarette butts are 36 per cent of all the litter on our streets," Coun. Jane Batty said.

The ashtray chosen by the city is a streamlined, silver cyclinder that attaches to poles, Batty said. Each one costs $150.
I would absolutely love to know why they cost so much. Does that include installation? Or it that simply the price for the receptacle? That's ludicrous for a small cylinder a couple inches in diameter and a foot to 18" long.

Cost aside though, I'm glad steps are being taken. But the biggest obstacle is going to be smoker's attitudes, not lack of appropriate receptacles.

Yeah, vandalproofed anything is expensive. I took a close look at one and was really impressed with the design and workmanship. I think they'll hold up well. I'd sooner pay $150 once than $25 every 3 months until the program gets cut in a budget crisis and we're back where we were.

Now we just need those antique spittoons and gum receptacles. What`s with all this spitting anyway, it is like a fashion statement these days. The postman does it, women do it, people spit before getting into a car and as soon as they get out. Is it related to water bottles, like some spit hydration therapy. A truly disgusting habit.

The worst is when people spit on the floor of the bus. The bus! The same one they're riding in! I don't get it.

As I predicted, it seems most smokers are still too lazy to use the one in front of my building. The Cambridge bus stop is still always littered with butts everwhere even though a butt stop is three feet away.

whats the deal with spitting anyways? I dont get why these people have that much extra saliva to be spitting around. Are spitters just people who produce too much saliva? Unless i just ate something terrible i couldnt muster up the spit if my life depended on it.

I agree. It must be related to the bottle water sales or something. Its like a contest, you watch a group of people walk down a street and every third step someone shoots a spit. It must be a Pavlovian reaction.

This is not the horking ones that old men spit into the gutter in the old days but young and old people spitting like they are are chewing tobacco but they are not. Maybe they are snails and are just lubricating the sidewalk with slime to reduce friction.

Apparently because it's only a pilot project, they're on Whyte Ave and Jasper Ave only at the moment... but there is potential for the project to expand if it's a success.

Default Edmonton’s anti-butt program deemed a success

Edmonton’s anti-butt program deemed a success
BY JOSEPHINE LIM, EDMONTONJOURNAL.COM OCTOBER 15, 2009 11:25 AM

EDMONTON — Edmonton’s two cigarette litter pilot programs this year were a success, the program manager of Capital City Clean Up said Thursday.

Don Belanger said cigarette litter on the streets of Jasper Avenue was reduced by 87 per cent, judging from three locations where it was measured. Ashtray collection along Jasper went from 59 cups of litter in July to 138 cups in August, he said.

The program was launched on Whyte Avenue in January and on Jasper Avenue in July.

Seventy ashtrays were installed along Whyte Avenue from 99th Street to 109th Street, and 122 ashtrays were installed on Jasper Avenue between 97th Street and 109th Street.

I think it did do a pretty good job of at least raising awareness. I've noticed that most of my smoking friends are now going out of their way to either find an ashtray or butting out and putting it in a garbage can than they were in the past. A friend was in from Victoria and commented on the signs about the fine with some surprise, to which I responded "is tossing a receipt or gum wrapper littering? Why is a butt any different?" to which he responded "yeah, I guess you're right."

Hopefully they pick up where they left off next spring when the snowbanks melt and we're left with piles of gravel, garbage and butts.

...I'm just hoping they clamp down on butt tossers out of car windows...that shower of sparks may look "cool"...but the fire hazard is amazing...

...I too notice my friends (who still smoke) getting more careful with their cigarette disposal habits while downtown...

Besides using the installed ashtrays on Jasper Ave and Whyte Ave, I gotten into the habit of using the portable ashtray that a Capital City Cleanup person handed out to me this past summer.
