| Air/Rail Links Edmonton continues to improve its ranking as a major transportation hub for northern Canada and beyond. New air routes, more cargo, Port Alberta, a major rail operations centre and the related infrastructure are all part of this increasingly critical component of the region’s economic growth. Growth prompts airport lounge expansion
Wow great news for Fort McMurray, much needed. Plus customs and more non stops in the fall. my buddies up there will be pleased. However not such great news for YEG. Last edited by jbubble; 16-07-2012 at 09:42 PM.. Reason: Can't edit title, darn spell check....... |

Better watch out for a Fly YMM first campaign!
Although I am curious as to what other routes they are going to announce in the next "three to four months." |

^ Nah, bigger challenge to Calgary than Edmonton...the difference being YYC can afford 2%-3% drop way more than YEG. And the flights in 2012/2013 are more likely to be charters and charter-like flights - once a week to popular vacation spots (whether that's Transat or WestJet or CanJet). New daily or 4x weekly service - except to Vancouver, Toronto, or a new Maritime service - isn't likely to happen just yet. Look forward to Scott's announcement this fall of new Canadian destinations to prove me wrong....
The big change should come in the fall of 2014. New terminal in the spring, better airfield service, and potential spare capacity at both WestJet and Air Canada. That's when the airport will finally get the scheduled service it deserves. Until then...call the new 2012 service "beta testers". Maybe YMM will "buy" one of the new WestJet 737-700's next fall, but I don't see why YMM would need to offer huge incentives to get new routes - they should be swimming in routes by 2015. To the point where that impacts the need to fly in workers from Edmonton and Calgary. Ft. Mac will be a great place to watch WestJet's regional strategy unfold. Lots of potential passengers - do they decide to stick with 2-3-4 flights per day on smaller Q400s and add a flight or two daily on the now-spare 737-600's to far-flung destinations, probably on a 1x/2x weekly basis? YYZ-YMM-PSP/LAS/PHX/CUN-YMM-YYZ daily in winter would be handy competition to Air Canada. Or do they ramp up to 8x daily and funnel everyone through their hub? That might be a precursor for what they plan to do with Edmonton a year or two later.... |

The former CEO of YEG is now running YMM and doing great things. Reg Milley seems alright but we just haven't had any major routes added in what seems like ages. Bit disappointing.

Yah he sure is earning his salary, one of the highest of all airport CEOs in Canada, higher than Calgary's. |
