With all due respect to EIA I would have preferred the new flight.
I love comments like those... come on now.

Edmonton International Airport celebrates environmental certification

EDMONTON JOURNAL

Edmonton International Airport has achieved environmental LEED Gold certifications for its South Terminal expansion — a first for an airport terminal in Canada — and for its new Central Tower.

LEED — Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design — is a certification achieved through independent review of design, construction, operation and maintenance practices. It’s used by 150 countries.

Airport officials marked the achievements with a ceremony Wednesday.

“EIA has committed to being environmentally and socially responsible while meeting the Edmonton region’s growing need for air service,” Steve Rumley, EIA vice-president, infrastructure, said in a news release.

^ All very nice, and I take your point there, Ian. But . . . Let's have a real international airport. One with more than a light handful of European carriers and a smattering of American ones.

Just to put things in perspective YYC, YHZ AND YOW have about 10% of their total traffic as international. YEG on the other hand had as little as 5% in 2013 and 7% for 2015. It would only take one or two more carriers to get us on par with them.
On the other hand we are way behind YYZ at 32%, YVR at 23% and YUL at 38%.

^as jet ranges get longer and longer, its going to be interesting to see if perhaps YYC and YEG can position themselves for more Asian locations. Problem is, can fly almost all the way to the giant cities now. I was reading about the new longest commercial flight in the world, which will be 18.5 hours in a 777, Doha to Auckland:

Kamloops was only brought on due to the fact that half of that city worked in Ft.Mac.......along with Vernon.....are they close?...geography of BC sucks cuz I hate the "Bring Cash" province. The project I am on in BC still runs a small charter there and to the Island.... Another place whose entire population worked in the Mac

Looks like United will be flying mainline A319 to DEN in March - but this route will be down to one daily from up to 4 dailies just a couple of years ago.

I am sure this will be a temporary capacity increase.

^ that would be a dream.....

but why would any airline want to run this route? PEK-JFK does not require a tech stop.

Hainan is planning to run YYC, so does that mean CA will pick up the route?

I am not convinced....what's your source?

Someone posted this on SSP tonight

Quote:
From someone on the YEG Spotters Facebook Group:
Quote:
Application by Air China to the CAAC to operate PEK-YEG-JFK passenger service upto 3 times weekly. Does it mean it's going to be approved? Not always the case, but with Hainan operating to YYC as of June it could be, since only one Chinese is carrier is authorized to operate a specific route as per the Chinese government. Next round of approvals is due in April.

Air China Cargo service at EIA, Air China big cheese visiting here a short while ago, Mayor Iveson in China recently to promote Edmonton. Possibility is good, in my own amateur opinion.

It's been applied for so not much to dream about.

All new flights need CAAC approval (that's China's aviation authority) and they over rule pretty much everyone.

^ tuffyy explicitly and repeatedly said his info was a flight shared with another Canadian city.

The tuffyy rumour seems to be quite a lot farther ahead than requesting rights to a route.

Bumped and edited second map to remove "Alberta Advantage Destinations" which Hainan Airlines has now trumped us (i.e., People's Republic of China).

Not directly related to YEG, but looks like WS is looking to slow down its remaining Q400 deliveries with the poor Alberta economy being given as a big factor.
