Edmonton International Airport celebrates environmental certification

EDMONTON JOURNAL

Edmonton International Airport has achieved environmental LEED Gold certifications for its South Terminal expansion — a first for an airport terminal in Canada — and for its new Central Tower.

LEED — Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design — is a certification achieved through independent review of design, construction, operation and maintenance practices. It’s used by 150 countries.

Airport officials marked the achievements with a ceremony Wednesday.

“EIA has committed to being environmentally and socially responsible while meeting the Edmonton region’s growing need for air service,” Steve Rumley, EIA vice-president, infrastructure, said in a news release.

^ All very nice, and I take your point there, Ian. But . . . Let's have a real international airport. One with more than a light handful of European carriers and a smattering of American ones.

Just to put things in perspective YYC, YHZ AND YOW have about 10% of their total traffic as international. YEG on the other hand had as little as 5% in 2013 and 7% for 2015. It would only take one or two more carriers to get us on par with them.
On the other hand we are way behind YYZ at 32%, YVR at 23% and YUL at 38%.

^as jet ranges get longer and longer, its going to be interesting to see if perhaps YYC and YEG can position themselves for more Asian locations. Problem is, can fly almost all the way to the giant cities now. I was reading about the new longest commercial flight in the world, which will be 18.5 hours in a 777, Doha to Auckland:

Kamloops was only brought on due to the fact that half of that city worked in Ft.Mac.......along with Vernon.....are they close?...geography of BC sucks cuz I hate the "Bring Cash" province. The project I am on in BC still runs a small charter there and to the Island.... Another place whose entire population worked in the Mac

Looks like United will be flying mainline A319 to DEN in March - but this route will be down to one daily from up to 4 dailies just a couple of years ago.

I am sure this will be a temporary capacity increase.

^ that would be a dream.....

but why would any airline want to run this route? PEK-JFK does not require a tech stop.

Hainan is planning to run YYC, so does that mean CA will pick up the route?

I am not convinced....what's your source?

Someone posted this on SSP tonight

Quote:
From someone on the YEG Spotters Facebook Group:
Quote:
Application by Air China to the CAAC to operate PEK-YEG-JFK passenger service upto 3 times weekly. Does it mean it's going to be approved? Not always the case, but with Hainan operating to YYC as of June it could be, since only one Chinese is carrier is authorized to operate a specific route as per the Chinese government. Next round of approvals is due in April.

Air China Cargo service at EIA, Air China big cheese visiting here a short while ago, Mayor Iveson in China recently to promote Edmonton. Possibility is good, in my own amateur opinion.

It's been applied for so not much to dream about.

All new flights need CAAC approval (that's China's aviation authority) and they over rule pretty much everyone.

Bumped and edited second map to remove "Alberta Advantage Destinations" which Hainan Airlines has now trumped us (i.e., People's Republic of China).

Not directly related to YEG, but looks like WS is looking to slow down its remaining Q400 deliveries with the poor Alberta economy being given as a big factor.

Sonny boy and I just heading to EIA right away. His mom is arriving back from her trip to Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta to visit family. She got her purse ripped off her in Saigon, all her plastic, cash, id, passport, phone, everything gone. She was in the hospital with a quite serious head injury. Its been quite a time and she will be happy to be back I'm sure.

More unfortunate news, WestJet won't be operating Edmonton to Hamilton this summer.

^ Yup, found that out the hard way today on a Moncton trip. Got the e-mail telling me we're now routed via (complete with aircraft changes) Toronto. Buggered up a nice timing, too, arriving in Moncton at 12:33am rather than 8:30pm. Then departing Moncton at 6:45am rather than 8:45am on the return leg. Oh well, YEG-YQM via Hamilton was nice while it lasted.

Me too, but one way only. We're taking via the other way. Sucks. It adds a couple hours to the trip and I really did NOT want to have to change planes just at the beginning of the trip with Kids and all in tow.

Years ago we had a change in Winnipeg for a similar trip. That was better, at least you're going the right direction and the stop is in the middle when you want it.

Those Hamilton Westjet flights used to sometimes just stop at Hamilton then fly on to Newfoundland or Nova Scotia. I'm thinking that might be the reason they are going (ie the worker commute has dried up).

The route existed way back, like 2000, before the big live east/ work camp thing boomed. It was full then, at least when I took it.

That's one we've just been shunted from - Edmonton to Moncton. I think you're right, a fair percentage of the traffic was oil guys. The plane would be on the ground in Hamilton for about 30 mins. or so, drop off a few, take on a few, then carry on to Moncton.

Now, it's to Toronto, an hour wait and change planes for Moncton. The revised timing sucks, too. The total convenience factor is shot.

Here's a summary of changes to WestJet's network out of Edmonton this spring and summer. Numbers are weekly departure changes or aircraft changes. All numbers are versus the previous spring or summer.

Before our resident crazy gets in here a couple of things to keep in mind:

Summer 2016 will still see more weekly departures than Summer 2014.

Air Canada, United and American are also cutting flights out of Edmonton, so its not just a WestJet thing.

^ "resident crazy"?

I suppose I shouldn't ask...

But no, when we get funnelled through Calgary way beyond the justified amount, call it crazy to say it, it is what it is. We're covering their losses.

Haven't been "funnelled" for years and there is, in my view, no "justified amount" when one patronizes only carriers that fly ex-YEG to the US or to Europe.

Heck, I fly only non-stop domestic too and so I will be on AC to YUL even though I am a Gold WestJet.

^Many of us have been doing this same.....but obviously there aren't many of us around the YEG area.

Even when the backbone of business travel (all those head offices in Calgary) shed thousands of white collar jobs, YYC still manages to hold on to their overseas flights, even add more.

^ I certainly wouldn't put it that way.

He called Delta from Seattle to both Edmonton and Calgary, and while Calgary got it immediately, Edmonton had to wait an extra year or so.

Plus this is business in the real world, plans actually do change or get delayed. It can easily be correct information, then the deal falls through.

I don't expect it, but I won't be surprised if it happens either.

YYC got direct non stop to NRT and hearsay was YEG was to get direct to PEK but it went to YYC instead. YYC two direct non stop flights to Asia, YEG zero

The hearsay I recall was the PEK flight was to have been "shared", not YEG-exclusive, and like I say, who knows, maybe that was the plan at one point.

No news that Calgary has better service though. But remember, we just got back into Europe with Icelandair, now we have KLM upgauging their aircraft and their frequency at every opportunity. Plus we now have more or less equal service to Seattle on Delta, and that's giving us price and service competition to Asia. We're behind, but we're not standing still, that's the balanced view.

May or may not change things at YEG but is interesting none the less:

Quote:
Alaska Airlines and Virgin America: Uniting to create the premier West Coast airline

When it comes to flying, there are airlines that get you from point A to point B, and then there are airlines that get you.
At Alaska Airlines, and at Virgin America, it’s always been about the latter. Today two of the country’s favorite carriers announced their intention to merge, forming the premier airline for people on the West Coast to fly.

^ I wouldn't expect major improvements or degradation from this announcement at YEG. If our Seattle service on Alaska is withdrawn, it would have been going to have been withdrawn anyways. Might increase our chances of having another carrier to LA, but probably not with the Dollar less than 85 cents or so.

Looks like Emirates is going to start code sharing on WestJet's LGW route. Should be useful for connections since Emirates has 3 daily flights out of LGW (going up to 4 starting in the fall). I wonder if this might help boost demand and convince WestJet to gives us an increased schedule in the future?

Quote:
Emirates starting May 2016 will further expands codeshare partnership with WestJet, when the latter begins service to London Gatwick. From 06MAY16, Emirates’ EK code will appear on following WestJet’s London Gatwick routes. Reservation will be available at a later date.

Emirates operated by WestJet
London Gatwick – Calgary
London Gatwick – Edmonton
London Gatwick – St. John’s NFLD
London Gatwick – Toronto
London Gatwick – Vancouver
London Gatwick – Winnipeg

^ I would guess the code share does give a marginal increase to Westjet's Gatwick route, but I wouldn't expect it to be enough for Westjet to boost its YEG attention (by itself.)

I do believe however, that Edmonton could sustain somewhere around 4 daily trans-Atlantic flights year-round, and we're nowhere close to that yet. More likely what would up our frequency and season-coverage on Westjet would be the general maturation of their business model (including this codeshare and others) and additional widebody aircraft in their fleet.

Not exactly Edmonton news, but a bonus to those headed to India, via Vancouver.
