Default Wpg Airport ,makes world's iconic list

There was a time, not so long ago, when airports in major international cities weren’t more attractive than your average industrial warehouse -- a fitting environment as passengers in the 1970s and '80s were essentially loaded and unloaded like so much cargo. Narrow hallways harshly lit with florescent lighting, depressing décor and confusing layouts downgraded a once-glamorous, fashionable adventure into a distinctly pedestrian experience.

They must have mistaken Winnipeg's airport for somebody else because it sure doesn't belong on that list with some of those others.

That was my first thought as well.

The new expansion IS amazing. I used to love how cheap their executive park was there!

From the review:

Renowned architect César Pelli (who designed the Petronas Towers in Malaysia and the International Financial Centre in Hong Kong) drew his inspiration from the vast prairies and sky when he conceived of this terminal, the first freestanding airport building in Canada that’s LEED-certified. Skylights, an atrium and large windows fill the space with light and bring the big sky inside -- a design element that (along with “smart” mechanical systems) helps reduce overall energy consumption.

Makes a compelling case - albiet I admit - haven't been to Winnipeg in awhile.

I love what Stuart McLean said about Winnipeg..."It's one of the hardest places to get people to move to and one of the hardest place to get people to move from..."

Good news for this project and the city of Winnipeg.

And part of the reason they got an entirely brand-new terminal was because the old one was a bit of a joke. The new one is not.

I have flown through WPG a few times now since the new terminal has opened and have found it to be actually friendly to use. Yes it is small but the interior is easy on the eyes. Would I put it on this list probably not. Most airports are quite generic now; architectural elements are similar in most I have been in. None of the North American Airports I've been to are that inspiring. I have noticed how I can get off a flight and if you don't hear the language you don't know what city or country you are in. I remember sitting in a section of the Munich airport and thinking I was sitting in the Denver Airport. The shopping is better a some airports though, My wife seems to know where all the expensive jewelry stores are at in most major international terminals.
