Default Edmonton electrical jobs

Hello, I wasn't to sure where to go to ask this, bit I am a journeyman electrician and am considering a move o Edmonton. I know there's lots of camp jobs up there which I am not interested in. Does anyone know what it's like to get hired in and around Edmonton with a local company that stays fairly local for there work? Any info is appreciated
Thanks

You will make less than your counterparts up in the patch, but I hear most trades are in demand, whether its a city job, or up north in a camp.

Most union construction tends to be industrial or institutional type work in Edmonton and Alberta. Commercial and residential tends to be non-union. Of course there's exceptions, but that's generally how it works around here. If you're looking to do commercial, you could try some of the following companies:

Muth
Mogo
Tempo
Territorial
Kel's
AltaPro

Course, that's just a brief listing of only a fraction of the commercial electrical contractors in the city. Commercial construction, despite popular perception, has been fairly slow in Edmonton the past year or so. But things are picking up significantly right now, and a lot of companies are starting to hire again. You shouldn't have much trouble finding a job at all. I think journeyman rate in commercial is somewhere around $35-38/hr right now, straight wage and not including vacation/stat pay and so on. But don't quote me on that.

Good luck.

Yes good electricians are hard to find around here lately. As stated most are on the high paying out of town jobs, the lackies seem to have been left behind. i.e. commericial install of a 12'x12' track light took two complete days for two men.

Personally I would stay away from the unions and find a small contractor doing a vareity of work such as what you seem to be doing today.

Thanks for all that info I will defiantly be looking into all that. I just wanted to make sure I would have a good shot at getting a job there once I arrive as I'd be selling my house here first. Wouldn't wanna sell the house, quit my job and not find anything there haha.
Thanks again for the info

The Edmonton market is an electrical market right now. If the right skill set is there, it shouldn't be difficult to find something that draws a handsome salary. If you can out-perform what JJMorrocco has already identified as being a realistic phenomenon here in Edmonton, then look to move forward quickly. Just be prepared for it.
