Default Beverly Heights Near Net Zero House

I had the opportunity to go inside this place and I have to say it is pretty cool. Much of the house is made from recycled or reused material (except for energy efficient windows, insulation, appliances, etc. The one storey even has a recycled gymnasium floor, complete with original paint lines, as its hardwood floor. Good job by Manasc Isaac! Tours are apparently available.

^I think it looks sort of modernist / cool, better than 90% of what you see being built in residential neighborhoods:

In the eye of the beholder though I guess.

^ There was a cute little bungalow on that lot before... a bit of a fixer upper, but the view is really nice.

This new house looks okay I guess... so-called "modern" houses are a bit of a hit & a miss vis-a-vis the style... the one pic makes it look like a double-high mobile home (as opposed to double wide :P )

The corrugated metal siding is just plain ugly

I'd rather live beside this than dark olive, chocolate brown or slate stucco. This was featured on the Nature of Things episode when they were lauding Edmonton's waste management. Chez Shafraz amirite?

I think they spent a lot of time on sun/shade studies. Above and beyond what was required, which is why almost all their neighbours love the new addition.

There used to be a large row of trees on the back of the lot against the alley, so the house to the north didn't have a view to begin with.

I like it from some angles, but not so much from others.

Owners acted as GCs and did a lot of the work themselves, which saved a bundle.

How do you define "much of the house is made from recycled or reused material" - the concrete foundation? the new lumber for framing" the poured concrete floors for each level? the massive amounts of Roxul insulation? the drywall? the siding? the solar panels? Maybe some of the finishes are recycled but its a far cry from most of the house.

To me the house is overbearing for the lot. There must be a bylaw deivation on this property to allow more than maximum development area percentage.

It might be a bit more eye appealing too if the owner finally finished up the landscaping - knocked down the old garage, put in a sidewalk and maybe get rid of the 1980's era satellite dish???

I suggest you peruse the blog detailing the building of the house instead of automatically calling BS.

^ I was speaking to what I actaully witnessed while the hosue was being built, as I pass by this house nearly daily. It was not a premature call on BS, but rather a question to you to define the term MUCH of the house. The statement of much of the house is FINISHED with recycled materials might be much more relevant.

From the five pages of blog I perused I still don't see reference to MUCH of the house being reused material. There is a lot more hype about some motor bike guy coming for a visit
Below is a excerpt form the blog - seems to summarize what was re-used, I didn't see any other reference past this point (page 5??)
"They wanted to see our re-use of materials like the brick wall, sub-zero-fridge doors, church pews turned to door casings and window seats and particularly our experiment with carbonized wood! They were keen to see how we used low-tech solutions for more ecologically friendly building. "

One of the best lots in the city. Refinery, river and skyline.

I rather like the look of that house. It's a change from the little boxes on the hillsides that all look the same.
