After years of hot ratings, the NHL finally cooled off during the Stanley Cup finals.
NBC and NBC Sports Network combined to average a 1.8 household rating and 3 million total viewers, according to Nielsen, during the six-game series that wrapped up Monday. http://www.medialifemagazine.com/col...ey-cup-finals/

^ Agreed. I bet viewership in Canada was also poor compared to normal. Even those friends of mine who normally live for hockey didn't seem to care about this year's playoffs by the end.

i thought the finals were boring this year and only watched the last 2 games in full. i was pizzed that the Rangers let themselves get bounced by the Devils, and it kinda spoiled the Rangers/Kings final i was hoping for. do the Rangers still think they don't need Rick Nash? he could have been the difference.

The marquee players were bounced early from the playoffs. No Crosby, No Ovechkin.
The list of NHL players that turn US heads and gain ratings there is far fewer than it is in say the NBA. Kovalchuk and Kopitar should be up there and they would be if they were basketball players.. To make matters worse for the casual viewer is hockey is a team sport played by several lines and several players. vs basketball where the starting lineup and stars are on the court almost all the time. The star factor seems to be a big appeal in the States. That said I know I'm watching the team oriented sport everytime.

Why do we feign surprise everytime it's revealed that the US Just Isn't That Into Hockey?
Seriously.

^ There's still more hockey fans in the states than in Canada.... 350 M people, if 5% are hockey fans, that's 17.5 M fans... or about half the population of Canada.
Parts of the US are certainly big hockey fans. |

The North and NE US has had a strong hockey following for close to a century, with their collegiate programs. In California, hockey was largely supported by Canadian expatriates.
The World Hockey Association had the Alberta/Edmonton Oilers, and some franchises in the southern U.S. 40 starting 40 years ago.
