I booked a truck for moving more than one month ahead. I called U-HAUL one day before the moving day. I was told that I have to pick up and drop off at another location which is three times further than the original one. I was given the number of 1-888-738-4285 to inquire. The following is the conversation between me and the U-HAUL staff:
Me: "Why my booked location was changed?" U-HAUL:"That location is not available." Me:"When I was booking it, I was told that the location and the truck was available." U-HAUL:"We had no way to know if it was available or not ahead." Me:"Since you did't know if it's available or not, why did you tell me it was available then?" U-HAUL:"Do you want it or not? I have ten more phone calls." Because I had to move the next day and all the truck rentals are booked already. I had no choice at all. I had to supress my anger and said:"Yes." The U-HAUL staff said "Ok" in a rascal voice and then hang up and left me trembling in anger. |

After my last move, I vowed to hire professional movers for any move in the future, so I don't have to deal with crap like that again. Also, it's a lot easier

Apparently they have the same attitude towards customer service that they have towards vehicle maintenance. They do seem to be the cheapest place to buy a trailer hitch though.

Slightly ot: I'll just say this: If you're booking any kind of mover, get something in writing saying they'll have a truck for you on a certain day. The last 2 times I've been involved with a mover (different companies!) just decided they didn't want to do it, or just never showed up at all.
It's quite a racket. |

Last time I did a "do it yourself" move I rented a truck from Hertz and had similar issues. I had specifically booked and confirmed an automatic but on the day of the move they offered me a standard and said "do you want it or not?".
Ever since, I have hired moving companies. Sooooo much easier and totally worth the cost. Takes 80% of the hassle out of moving. |

I've had issues with U Haul before too, overcharging my credit card for a simple four hour rental of a pickup truck.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, I rented a 26 foot truck in 2009 from Penske and found their customer service to be wonderful, though I do believe they are a little pricier than UHaul. |
