This is a great success story so far. An upscale spa for guys in the heart of the downtown core. Something naysayers claimed wouldn't fly in this town, but they seem to be fairly busy. I've been there several times since they opened last year, and everything they do is top-notch. There's nice little touches like complimentary drinks and shoe shining, and the massage chairs. And there's nothing "girlie" about the place except for the lovely, pleasant and talented staff. Go try 'em out if you haven't done so already. |

It's where I get my hair cut.
I rarely go for the perks though, which is more me having been in the service industry and not wanted to create extra work for stuff I do well myself (ie. shine shoes...which I have a bit of a procedure for). It's always a great time and their prices are really reasonable for all you get. |

I've heard rumours through the design/architectue industry that they are not doing well and might close. Anyone else heard this?
To boot, the owner has been really ill. |

I dunno.
They seem to be fairly busy because I've had a hard time getting appointments at certain times, especially after work and on weekends. And when I go, those lockers in the change room are almost full. It could be kinda quiet during the day, but I would imagine that is true for any spa. That said, they could do with more advertising and exposure. After the initial media blitz, not a peep of them. And word of mouth goes a long way in the salon industry. Hopefully this thread can help! |

Yea, it was busy when I was there as well. Not crazy busy, but steady.
I agree, more advertising would be beneficial as it has been quiet since their debut. |

This is a GREAT place. Last time I was in, the girls that work there were commenting on how busy it had been lately. Almost everytime I go, I chat with someone in the waiting room and it is their "first time."
I hope that the boardroom is not considering shutting down! |

Resurrecting this thread because 6 years later The Board Room seems to be sliding downhill, and I'm not sure if I'll go back. This place lost some of its lustre when they went unisex and did away with the cozy waiting room about a couple of years ago, but it was still worth going to because of the staff and the service.
Today I went there for my biannual back waxing. The girl at the desk was way more interested in her personal phone call than attending to my appointment. She seated me in the waiting area...and then 15 minutes later, still waiting. So I went back to the front desk, and the silly cow is still chatting on the phone...and only then did she go back there to get my appointment going. A couple of minutes later, instead of a perky young cutie I am accustomed to, I am greeted by a Japanese granny. She barely spoke English so there was very little conversation during my appointment. She did a good and thorough job with the back waxing. Still, I missed having an engaging conversation with someone like Rebecca (owner's daughter), Hannah or Cindy because for me that's part of the appeal of going to a place like this. Overall, it seems there was a recent mass turnover in management and staff. They still must be busy because the last couple of weeks, I still had a hard time getting an appointment. But if things continue to slide, I dunno how long they'll last.

I recently stopped going because of the recent changes too. It just completely lost its appeal when they went unisex. I understand the move from a bottom-line perspective, but the new waiting room is cramped and hidden, the people up front are not as friendly and welcoming, I found that I had to actually ask for the extras (which are supposed to be part of the deal), and it just doesn't have that personal flair anymore.
That said, Kara gave me an incredible haircut every time I went there, and went the extra mile in ensuring my comfort (which, at the end of the day, is what I'm paying $50/haircut for) with the hot towel treatment and pleasant conversation. They got away from what they originally started out doing, and that's why they're losing their long-time clients. That said, they could be making up for it in new clients post-reno. Who knows?

3 posts were unapproved. There is going to be a much lower tolerance for name calling on C2E.

Unless they do it in chalk.

Sonic, service levels have slid everywhere over the last decade. Boom times I suppose. Last edited by KC; 18-08-2012 at 08:03 PM.. |

Well, I am happy to report that the Board Room is getting back on track!
I was there earlier today for an appointment. I was told that Ed the owner, who's been hands-off due to health issues, saw that the unisex theme that his management had implemented ended up losing too many male clients while not attracting many female clients. So he stepped back in and completely gutted his staff (I noticed his prior manager is now across the hall @ ICON) and is starting again from scratch. So yes, they are going back to being a men-only spa. And yes, the comfy waiting room has returned.
