I'm curious how many people are starting to use their iPhones (smart phones) for payments. Starbucks etc.
If not will you soon adopt it? Personally, I don't have a smartphone but as soon as I get one, I'll be wanting to dump my wallet and all its cards (or get a man-purse - which of course I'll call a holster or something.) ![]() |

Not a lot of vendors have the updated readers to accept NFC payments here in Canada. I hope this technology spreads, more so for membership cards than credit cards. I am not familiar with the iphone version, but Google wallet is taking off very well in the US, so I'd assume that the iphone version is doing well also.
EDIT: Just did some digging and iphone does not have an NFC chip. What kind of payments were you talking about? Last edited by bolo; 26-07-2012 at 03:28 PM.. |

I pay my bills online using my bank app. Is that what this thread is about?

Depending on the charges/fees, it's certainly something I wouldn't mind adopting so long as there is no significant cost to me or retailers who use it over and above what's standard now with credit and debit cards. There will always be a place for cash, but NFC enabled phones could easily replace all credit and debit cards for most people.

Both NFC and via app (Square or whatever)
http://gigaom.com/mobile/square-goog...et-exodus-nfc/ Good article... Also interesting discussion about small businesses' rapid adoption The death of cash By Miguel Helft, senior writer July 9, 2012 http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2012/07/...re-death-cash/ http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/tag/square/ Excerpt: "And yet when I walked in for the first time, I immediately felt like one of the regulars. "Charge it to Miguel," I told the barista after ordering a cappuccino, and charge it he did -- to my phone. Not that I ever pulled my iPhone from my pocket. Seconds after the barista tapped my order on Grumpy's minimalist register -- an iPad mounted on a stylish countertop stand -- my phone vibrated in my coat pocket, signaling that our transaction was complete. I couldn't wait to check that everything had worked as promised. (It had.) For the first time ever I was tickled by the act of paying for something."... Last edited by KC; 26-07-2012 at 05:55 PM.. |

I wonder how some marginal businesses will survive without cash transactions (which can end up in the back pocket without any record or tax paid on them).

While there's always going to be security risks to any form of payment, NFC is actually pretty secure. Both because the transmission range is only a few cm, and the limited bandwidth needs allows applications to use very high levels of SSL / encryption compared to wifi and cellular networks.
I actually did some work on NFC development in phones when I was working in Ontario, and (assuming there is decent consumer acceptance from trials like Google Wallet's), there is definitely a huge interest from large retailers in NFC payments. Combined with the internet and location services abilities of a phone, payment applications like Google Wallet can essentially give bricks-and-mortar retailers the marking flexibility of an online store. They would be able to implement completely individualized coupons, offers, and advertising suggestions based on your past purchases. Something that has given online retailers like Amazon a huge advantage over traditional stores. Not to say I wouldn't have my reservations about using NFC for payments. But, ignoring the big brother aspects of it, it would definitely be nice to condense all those payment cards, gift cards, and loyalty / point cards into a single device. |
