Default If I had an idea for the City of Edmonton

Folks, over the last few years, I've suggested/contributed to numerous, near whimsical, here ideas for the city. c2E's a great place to toss out ideas, get feedback, etc.

However, for a number of years I've kept to myself a truly serious, practical, pragmatic and 'do-able' idea for the City of Edmonton. So what would I have to do to get the City to seriously consider it? (Letter to the mayor, letter to all of counsellors...? A full blown presentation.)

Any suggestions, considerations on how to best present it to the City?

Note: It's not anything I'd gain anything from, just something that would be great for the city to do.

Best place to start, depending on the idea, is by creating a recommendation or guideline proposal with groups/people keen on the idea. Once somewhat concrete in mind and paper, set a meeting up with your local Councillor to go over it and see if they might support introducing it. It will also provide you with an opportunity for feedback and clarification of procedure.

...in the end, it will be a full on buisness case and presentation to council - if it is city assistance that you seek. Otherwise, it is like any start up...

...but IanO has a lot of great points. You'll need to gauge resistance, acceptance, and ROI (soft and hard)...

...get a group together to discuss and vet your idea...then see if enough want to back you going forward...it also doesn't hurt to have a few businesses onside...

Go to City Hall and see if they have a suggestions box somewhere in the building. Write to your councilor and follow up with him/her. Write to a local newspaper about your idea.
