Default Highlands Public Library | Under Construction

Didn't see any mention of this. But the Highlands library was slated for an expansion. However from my understanding, there were major deficiencies in the original structure and is now being completely rebuilt. The original building has now been completely torn down as of last friday. For a look at the architect's renderings, check out the link below.

If someone with the know how can post those images (not able to simply copy pic urls) that would be much appreciated

Yuppers! The old building has finally come down. They shipped me out to another Library while my new home gets built. Super excited. We bought the two houses behind the library so the new location will be bigger. More parking space. 2 levels! Very exciting!!

They did the same thing with the Jasper Place library. Complete demolition and rebuild.

The big deficiency was a basement that was supposed to host programs but was only accessible by (narrow) stairs. I liked the look of the old building: clean, understated, modern, solid. The new one is flashy, likely inefficient and will look dated in 20 years, but the new space will be nice.

Not to mention that the new building is miles ahead of anything surrounding it in terms of design. It will definitely stand out

Its supposed to stand out. Highlands as a buisness community is all but dead save for 112 Avenue. Lets hope the bold new library brings development back to the 118 Avenue area of Highlands. Can we say goodbye Joy Hos? We can only hope!!

I'm not familiar with the business so don't take me as defending it, but what is wrong with Joy Hos? Is that not the old convinience store location of a 7-11?

And it should stand out. I agree that highlands seriously needs some new development. I wonder how much people in this area now regret NIMBYing to death the proposed condo development where the old safeway is located.

As for Joy Ho's, I think they own that building. So I think they and their ridiculous sign (nothing screams ghetto like mini bicycles hanging off the side) are going to be mainstay's there for as long as they have demand for cheap cigarettes. Ditto for the highway 420 building (which I also think they own) and dilapidated used car lot kitty corner to it (how does this place stay in business?). It's all very sad when you consider how much potential that section of 118 ave has.

Shady business at best. PM if you want details. Not really a public discussion.
