It seems to me that most buildings are given dimension guidelines for their signs. For example, there was a notice I recently received where a business was seeking permission to place a larger than called for sign. This business was granted their larger sign which looks suitable and not even large with respect to the size of their building.
Why does the MCDonalds' sign on their new business located at 111 Avenue and 106 street have to be enormous? They have 4 other signs on their building as well as this HUGE sign on the Boulevard in front of their building. Does anyone know if this extra large sign is temporary or did they 'apply' for their sign to be oversize and permanent? |

Your best bet would be I inquire with the city at 311. They will direct the question to the right department and get back to you with a response. It may take a few days or a few calls, but they're good at directing you to the right people.

On premise freestanding or fascia signs must comply with sign bylaws.

But the DO could always grant a variance: http://webdocs.edmonton.ca/zoningbyl...nt_Officer.htm

Yes they can, but you can appeal that at SDAB if you feel it is not warranted or that it would unduly and or materially affect the use and enjoyment of your property.

look what happens when it's exercised (or insisted upon) in the other direction: ![]() all tenants need good and appropriate signage. they don't necessarily need "as much as they can get". at some point, it becomes pure advertising rather than signage and those aren't the same thing...

It's a good bet that most complaints about signage are really complaints, mostly ideological, about the sign's owner or owners.

I'm guessing the appeal period has already passed. Sorry LKnightly, I think you're SOL on this one.
Really, the DO only has so much power as per the Zoning Bylaw, and if no one appeals their decision, they'll say that obviously no one has a problem with it, right? I'm sure a refusal would have been appealed (and won) by Rotten Ronnie. |

the home depot signage in manhattan is also pretty special (and posted here elsewhere in another thread).
