As most of us can appreciate, the view we get on certain aircraft can make for very interesting flight. What aircraft is your fave and why. I have a couple.
1. 747 classics with Pratt and Whitney JT9d's not Rolls Royce or GE. They don't look as good. The flaps on the SP are very unique as well. 2. DC 8- 70 series with Snecma bolted on the wings and no leading edge devices. 3. 727. With it's Kruger flap systems. 4. 737 classics with the clam bucket reversers. 5. 3 holers...Nuf said. 6. The VC10 with it's elegant tail Yep, old skool to the core.... ![]()

Lockheed L1011, not so much for what it looked like - although it was far from ugly even with that huge rolls royce third engine in the tail - but for some of the smoothest and most comfortable flights i've ever been on. politically however, it's ride was rougher than the F35...

Lockheed Electra. It had large oval windows.
Super Constellation (Never flew in one, but still like the looks of the plane.) DC 3. Took a trip in one from Yellowknife once. Wonder if Buffalo Joe was at the controls. The plane that I covet as a private pilot: Lake Bucaneer. The first plane I ever flew in - Norseman on floats. The best plane ride I ever had - flew twice with the Snowbirds. Seeing a nine-plane pack from one of the planes is an awesome experience.

The fun factor is inversely proportional to the size of the plane. For commercial flights that don't cost an arm and a leg, I like the dash-8 variants. 50% window seats, you're never stuck over the wing and you get to fly lower and slower for a better view of the scenery (so long as the weather cooperates anyways).

Mine is the Dash 8 as well, for all those reasons and the sentimental factor. A long time ago, when I was four, I took a Canadian Airlines Dash 8 down to Calgary, and it was one of the most cool flights I had ever taken in my lifetime. Canadian Airlines has always been my favourite airline - even twelve years after its demise - and when I fly on the AC Dash 8's (which were recycled from Canadian), it brings back very happy memories.

I have an admitted soft spot for the Twin Otter . Always seemed able to show up in even the most isolated of areas . Extremely short take off , not fast but can be counted on. Flexible enough to serve as commuter craft on normal runways , on floats or tundra tires.

I always thought the de Havilland Mosquito was an amazing aircraft, I used to read war comics about it as a kid. The "wooden wonder", the Germans were amazed such a fast and effective aircraft could be built out of such simple matierals. It was developed from racing aircraft the British make in the 1930's, air racing then being a big sport. The simple wooden materials helped in a time of shortages of steel, and provided a useful way to use the skills of carpenters in Britian. Canada made more than a thousand of them as well.
After WWII some analysis was done, that showed the Mosquitos were more effective in their missions than the heavier bombers. Higher sucess rate, more accurate, and far less loss of crew life than say, a Lancaster or B17. I think a lot of modern bombing theory can be traced to the Mosquito (also the bomb scope technology the US were using in their daylight raids with heavy bombers). The technologies sort of merged over time to become the pinpoint method with smaller aircraft which is so effective today. The Canberra bomber is an interseting aircraft as well, the replacement of the Mosquito (although Canberra was more of a high altitude aircraft), and very effective for its time (started to be designed way back in 1944). The US even licensed its manufacture. Last edited by moahunter; 23-07-2012 at 08:58 AM.. |

It’s not over yet! The Summer of Thunder continues at the AlbertaAviationMuseum The “Ice Pilots” of Buffalo Airways are coming to the Alberta Aviation Museum this Friday for (1) day visit! Departing the following day (Saturday July 28th) heading back to Yellowknife. Great visuals of a popular working vintage aircraft and the family team that makes it work while supplying Canada’s North. Thomas Hinderks Executive Director, Alberta Aviation Museum Association |

F14 - Probably a little Top Gun influenced, but I think it's just beautiful. Love the variable wing geometry.
T-28 Trojan - Family related. My uncle used to re-build a lot of these in Victoria. I always grew up wanting to own one as a kid. |
