P.S. sarcasm....

I do agree it would be nice to have a park there, but to lose the view of this building is even worse.

I guess we will wait and see.

Would love to see the incorporation of a cafe or restaurant that would provide an awesome view of the valley. There are are not enough places in the city that one can enjoy a beer and a spectacular view of the valley at the same time.

There's already a cafe there that faces South.

True but it hardly provides the level of view that could potentially be incorporated into that site.

I was going to say, is the space at the rear of Le Marchand occupied? Happened to stumble across it one afternoon when we were up in the area—never knew anything was back there before—and couldn't help but notice the space seemed... quirky. Maybe this is towards making the space more marketable?

Simons: Could addition dull heritage jewel?
By Paula Simons, edmontonjournal.com July 4, 2012 5:19 PM

Quote:
These days, the mansion has been successfully retrofitted into high-end offices and posh boutiques. Its owners are proposing a dramatic change: a three-storey, 10,000-square-foot office block, with an underground parkade.

The addition would be attached to the south, facing the river. Because the original building was designed in the shape of the letter H, the addition would slide in between, like a dresser drawer or puzzle piece. Although the building wouldn’t look much different from the street, most of the south facade would be hidden.

Don Wheaton, 29, speaks for Wheaton Investments, which bought the mansion in 2004. The addition would likely serve as Wheaton’s headquarters, with restaurant and retail space on the main floor.

“It’s an opportunity for us to create a more flexible space,” Wheaton says.

That south space is unfortunate, but the plans I have seen this far are no better.

The existing reto space sucks
maybe with the new addition
#1 it will done in keeping with the existing architecture of the existing "jewel"
#2 there will be a new resto right on the bank that would include a terrace

While I disagreed with Ian about the old BMO building which I thought was butt ugly, I do agree the addition to Le Marchand Mansion must be in keeping with the style and architecture of the existing building. Small variances to windows or concrete (if they match the color) instead of stone I could cope with.

The addition to the east of the building that is already built, I think is too much of a departure from the existing building.

The last time a "modern" addition was added to a historical building, we ended up with the butt-ugly Hotel Mac Annex. Be careful what you wish for.

No, I don't think they should try and replicate the design of the existing mansion. The expansion needs to be a clean, simple, modern design. Local examples of where this has worked well include the Strathcona Library addition, lobby on the John Deere lofts and the Yellowhead Brewery.

I believe the U of A library is another... They glassed in the space between two buildings and made an atrium.

Nope, they are inappropriate to and jar with the original design .(in opposition to complimenting or providing a transition.) Look to the mess between the CIBC and Commerce place as another example
The Boardwalk atrium actually does provide visual bridging between two dissimilar designs of buildings.
Enterprise square with its metal "siding" looks like a hashed together "cheap patch n' fix" as settlement to a (possibly better) earlier design. This now results in an an epic fail. Admittedly however the harsh original design left little to work with
My concern is that these transitions can be done seccessfully but are rarely executed so
Lets not go mess up another classic building
Just my opinion

Another example of what not to do. The Lyon Opera house on the left.

But for the right amount of money you can make anything work. I am hoping that LaM is done right. Should they mess with the original structure. No, but I don't own the building and as long as they add a good quality addition and not cheap out like ROM then let at it.

Parking was cheap in there too! $6.00 for a whole day.

Yes, that is exactly what we want... more cheap surface parking. This addition is one of the simplest and best in the city and actually preserves those wonderful ads.

^Agreed. Yellowhead brewery (formerly Mavericks?) is a nice addition to 105 street, which needs some TLC. It's one of the few buildings north of 102 ave that actually has street presence.

I agree, I wondered what they were developing in there when I came to school one day and found my regular parking spot was blocked off and dug up... But it is a wonderful addition to the neighbourhood. It looks delightful at night when lit up, and it truly shows that less can be more when it comes to design.
