I'd like to have a 2005 civic inspected next week, and am finding the 234 locations listed (http://www2.infratrans.gov.ab.ca/vis...lts_postal.asp) a bit daunting!
Any recommendations for a reputable and reasonably priced place? I called places nearest me with quotes from $125-240. Also wondering about recommendations for registry agents, or if they're all pretty much the same? Thanks! |

I found most registry agents to be the same. It really comes down to who you get behind the counter that day...and their mood. Otherwise, the process is exactly the same.
Being an AMA member, I recommend going through them for both the registration and for finding an inspection centre. Kal Tire has worked for me.

I took my old 2002 Civic to the dealer to get the inspection, but oddly they're not listed on that site. It cost a little more, but they sure know their Honda's. BTW it was an awesome car. I had upgraded since, but I kind of wish I kept it as a 2nd car. And registration places are all pretty much the same, as RichardS said.

I absolutely despise this process in Alberta. Privatization of our registries and unregulated inspection rates easily make this the most expensive province to register a car. I couldn't believe how cheap registration and licenses were in Ontario when I briefly lived there. Inspections in Alberta are the worst though. Garages are basically allowed to charge whatever they want. I ended up taking mine to a dealership when I came back to Alberta, because their quote was mid-priced. The advice I got was to go somewhere mid-priced. Too low, and they then try to fail your car for the most pointless reasons to then get you to spend money on fixes. I've heard Canadian Tire is about the worst for this. Mechanics are allowed to fail your car for really stupid reasons like minor steering misalignments, or even faulty power lock servos.
I've heard from a few people that the registry on 91st street and 39 ave is the cheapest in the city, though a little lacking in customer service the time I went there. Not sure one is really any better then the other. For the "convenience" of having more registry / inspection sites with kind of better hours and a little less red tape then other provinces, we really pay through the nose though. Was a mistake to privatize them in my opinion. Last edited by halocore; 28-06-2012 at 01:24 AM.. |
