EDMONTON - The city is looking at spending $720,000 a year to encourage homebuilders and renovators to think green.

The money is now used by the Carbon Dioxide Reduction Edmonton program, covering such items as rebates for energy-efficient furnaces and clothes washers.

But officials want to direct some of that cash toward other schemes under the new green building plan, such as energy-efficiency labels for buildings and education programs.

“What we think we’re going to do in the future is channel that (spending) to the green building program to focus on new and older houses and industrial buildings,” Peter Ohm, manager of the urban planning and environment branch, said Wednesday.

720K isn't going to get much, especially with govt inefficiencies.

The AB govt used to have a 10K rebate if you met or exceeded an Energuide score of 86 on your house (most super-insulated or net zero houses would meet this), but apparently that got axed last year. That was a big incentive as it paid for almost half the incremental costs on a new build.

The belgravia net zero house is a great idea, but man it's pricey. Currently listed for 1.25mil for a 1500 sq ft, 1BR bungalow. Finished basement.
