Congrats to the Oil Kings on their first division title. I hope they can take that all the way to the Memorial Cup and it'll be nice to have playoff hockey this spring.

I think Edmonton definitely is starting to know.
kinda a Edmonton Hockey nerd so I have kept track of the attendance for all oil king games. 2010-11: 37 home games, average attendance 5175 2011-12 Season: 36 home games(so Far), average attendance 6421 pretty good increase and good attendance in general. Almost a sell out crowd last game too. 16651! |

here is another interesting fact about all the different league attendance.
Average in the WHL is only 4196 based on the IIHF stats http://www.iihf.com/home-of-hockey/n...html?tx_ttnews[backPid]=955&cHash=fb6171f7ea |

The $99 playoff ticket pass is a great deal. Besides that, the floundering Oilers have me primed for a long Oil Kings playoff run.

They are an amazing team and yet just over 8,000 show up for a round 3 playoff game. Why would we rather support a 29 place NHL team than, what is arguably, the best team in the WHL?? We should be filling the building. Good job Oil Kings too bad we are not giving you the support you deserve.

What will be interesting is the Portland Winterhawks used to be the original Oil Kings.
So old Oil Kings vs new Oil Kings! Edit: guess the local media haven't forgotten either http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sport...149/story.html

went to the game last night (what bad luck to go to one of only 2 games they have lost this entire playoffs and in the past 25+ games...) huge crowd, bought tickets at the door and all that was left was way the hell up there.
good atmosphere to take your kids to, plus reasonable price. crowd musta been 1/4 kids.

Oil Kings lost 4-3 tonight and Oil Kings took some stupid penalties that gives Portland 2 power play goals. Oil kings should have won, if they just stay out of penalties.

I went to the game on Thursday. Good spirited game. Both teams played well, lots of scoring chances, two teams that pressure well and goaltending was great at both ends. Very high level of hockey.
The crowd of just over 11K was not as loud as I would like and a little disappointed how late people arrived for the game. Had a great time though and would recommend. Its actually nice not having the building plum full and having more access to facilities. Gotta say though ticketmaster isn't helpful. Why sell goal line tickets when center ice tickets in upper level were available. Whatever search engine ticket master uses to sort out "best" tickets clearly isn't working. It seemed like the system was instructed to sell one row at a time instead of best seat at a time. I much prefer when ticketmaster has the "pick your own" viewer option. That should be the default. Anything less is bad customer service.

I've been following the Oil Kings closely since the WJHC ended in January and I really want them to put away the W'hawks tonight in Portland. However, a small part of me wouild be okay with a Kings loss in Game 6 because: 1. I don't want to see this fantastic matchup go any thing less than the limit and 2. I'm very curious to see how many hockey fans Edmonton really has. The attendance/enthusiasm for Game 7 at Rexall will be a strong indicator.

Portland have more experience than Oil kings due to the fact that Portland did almost made to the WHL final last year but was ousted by Kootenay Ice in western confrence final. Oil kings were out in the eastern conference semi final that's why and this year there is 4 to 6 new players coming. Oil kings will be very good club next year.

Seemed like more than the announced attendance, I was thinking more like 14k. The crowd was the loudest I've heard them in a long time, next up, Memorial Cup! First game is Friday at 5 pm against the host team (Shawinigan).

^Left after the second Oil Kings down 3-2 and really carrying the play. Ouch, that third period must have been one to forget and move on!
Sea Dogs are the defending champs though. London tonight Jags?

Edmonton is likely be out of Memorial Cup Tournament for sure.

When Oil kings went to playoffs in WHL league, they play very well, but not in memorial cup, defence is still a problem for this team, their problem is lack of toughness and bodychecking is terrible that is why Shawinigan , St john and London blow oil kings defense apart pretty fast.

Oil kings will be a much better team next year because they will only lose 5 players next season, maybe winning another WHL championship again and make another run for Memorial Cup.

Saint John and London won't be in 2013 Memorial Cup as Sea dogs will lose about 12 players ( 5 forwards , 6 defenceman and one goalie and London will lose at least 8 players ( 4 forwards, 4 defenceman ) . Shawinigan will lose 9 players ( 6 forwards , 2 defenceman and 1 starting goalie next season. for Oil kings will lose 5 players ( 4 forwards and 1 defenceman).

Team just disappeared in the Memorial Cup. Disappointing in that I doubt they'll be back. Repeats aren't common and are reserved usually for dominant, excellent, clubs.
Oil Kings got outscored 16-4 over the last 3 games played. Terrible way to end the season.

Sad - but Kings have a ton of young players who will be back, will make the playoffs and stand a good chance of being in the Memorial Cup again.
Not as if the Knights and Sea Dogs are in the Cup for the first time!

It's not like they tried to lose. And perhaps see the Sea Dogs and London Knights regarding 'repeats aren't common'. sorry, but the Oil Kings are a dominant, excellent club who got their first taste of a Mem Cup. Pretty damn good for a 5 year existence. They were built for a run NEXT year and over achieved this year. As McBoo pointed out, lots of kids returning next year. I'm optomistic they'll be back.

In a 22 team league nothing is a given regardless of how good anybody thinks the club is and this for all we know could be the only time. Plus that in JR hockey the window is very short on any given roster configuration. Most years the team is substantially different. I cede that next year they'll be pretty similar but will the motivation be there to go on another long haul.
The club for whatever reason had trouble motivating itself for the biggest tournament in the nation. The coach is on record saying they had too many passengers, they had no commitment to system in the tournament and that the team was frustrated because they were causing their own frustration through endless mistakes and not buying into team concept. Players calling out each other on not really being there mentally. I'm not convinced either that what will have been learned this year is a positive lesson. A little adversity on a national stage can be a good thing and strenghen collective will. To be outright traumatized and embarassed on National TV might turn out to be unproductive. This team wanted to run and hide last night after it was 2-0. By the time it was 6-0 halfway through the game it was just demoralizing. Every player with head buried down. That will be their last memory of the season. The worst one to have. Something that could've been great quickly turned so sour. We'll see what happens.

Okay, the Oil Kings failed... to win the Memorial Cup Championship! If you are 17 or 18 years old, making the Memorial Cup Tournament is a dream. At the same time, it's a lot of pressure to handle. If you get down in a game early, it hurts your confidence and if you end up playing the other team's game, you lose big. This failure will be a major learning experience.
Also, the Oil Kings were coming off a seven-game series against Portland, and they had a plane trip down east. I'm sure the Oil Kings were exhausted, and it's hard to gauge what to expect.

Shawinigan is headed to the final vs london , very similar what Windsor Spitfires did in 2009 Memorial Cup and they were down 0-2 record and make it to the final and won their first ever Memorial Cup.
