Nicest Houses in Edmonton and area

My apologies if this has ever been posted before but aside from Daryl Katz's house and Bruce Saville's house, where would you say are some of the nicest houses in Edmonton?

St George's Crescent has a ton of nice houses as well, as well as Ravine Drive.

I remember reading once that a casino owner had a gigantic house along Highway 14. Any one know anything about that house?

Giant and nice aren't necessarily the same thing.

Ada Boulevard and Highlands in general south of 111 ave have some great renovated houses - as does Windsor Park.

I bet there's a ton of penthouses at the top of some of the older buildings downtown that have hidden gems in them that few people would ever know exist.

I've always liked the Westbrook area. That's where Saville's house is. Old riverbend has some nice pads as well. Lansdowne, grandview, aspen gardens.

That street in Windermere above the golf course is pretty impressive. Not my thing (lack of sidewalks, etc.), but amazing houses nonetheless.

Yes, the guy who used to own Argyll and Yellowhead casinos (plus some others in lethbridge i think) build a monstrosity off Hwy 14 just past the henday. It's an exact duplicate of a house he build in San diego. He passed away last year I think.

Ada Blvd between 50 st and 76 st in Highlands has some beautiful homes. The Highlands is full of many beautiful older and brand new homes.

There is a row of about 4 or so really unique houses down in Riverdale area. These were apparently all custom builds and if so you can tell.

I like many of the homes in the older neighbourhoods north of Whyte. Not large homes but nicely to scale with their lots. A monster house on a regular lot looks like a poor design to me.

In other areas along the river, like Grandview, the custom designed homes of the 1960s are often nice.

There's a nice house facing the ravine just west of the 119 Street and 23rd Avenue intersection. Also the Mel Hurtig log cabin that's mostly hidden from view, but overlooks the river valley. It's located a bit east of LeMarchand Mansion. And don't forget the former Pocklington house near the museum. And then there's "Soaring", the 23 million dollar house that was donated to the U of A.

i personally don't see the appeal of Ada Blvd, granted it has a river valley location, the vast majority of houses on the blvd are nothing special, and have not seen renovations since the 70's...plus the river valley view is partly of the refineries to the east or the Gold Bar Waste water treatment plant,;plus the vast majority of the east side, north of the river is a TOTAL DUMP

as for the Magrath mansion, it is ostentatious and totally looks out of place with the extremely modest homes (ie. old granny specials) around it

WHAT ??? I don't think you've even ever been in that area... Highlands has some gorgeous houses of all different styles, the neighborhood is a great, quiet and family oriented, has stellar river valley views and access.... And what an a$$holish thing to say about the NE... I'm sure your area is no better. It's people like you that make this city worse, not better.

My mom lives in Highlands and it is an amazing part of town. I love how much character and variety you see from house to house. Someone clearly doesnt spend enough time in the northeast!!

the new build that utilizes an undersized lot in one of the city's least desirable neighbourhoods creatively and tastefully? i believe the cladding is fibre cement. maybe its boyle st context overvalues it on my scale, but it is an excellent example for the city because of both what and where

Almost forgot Mill Creek, east of 99th street. It's an area in transition, some fascinating reno's - great access to Mill Creek Ravine.

I agree that it has some nice elements that are particularly good to see in that location, but I also see squandered potential and some odd architectural choices. Window space is at a premium in narrow lot housing, but the front and back of this house have a lot of blank wall. I think the asymmetry of the big second storey window all the way over on the side like looks kind of funny. I like the steeply pitched roof, but the lack of eaves makes the house look a bit like a stack of toy blocks. It also doesn't look like there is any living space under it, just a huge attic. Making it a 2.5 storey would have allowed more floor area and/or a smaller footprint for a bigger yard.

I see bad choices on the city's part too. The sidewalks look relatively new, but the fence positioning suggests the road ROW extends a few meters closer to the houses. Why didn't they put the sidewalk at the edge of the ROW and install a boulevard with trees?!?

That's my hood, McBoo. There are some really neat older houses in there, as well as some nice infills. I live in a house by Centennial Homes; they do Victorian and Craftsman homes that fit in extremely well in older neighbourhoods like this.

Large lot, big house, and well maintained. I also love the diversity in the area; my wife and I are often discovering "new" houses every time we go for a walk.

Unfortunately the area also has some bad infill as well. There's a company that has been putting up bland houses, and they're buying up some more lots as well.

Great hood - rented a tiny bungalow there for a couple of years upon returning to Edmonton.

Lots I miss about MC, but being able to walk to work, the less-stress DT farmer's market, cultural amenities, et al are making the transition to DT living pretty smooth!

I attended a few services at that UU church about fifteen or twenty years ago, and thought it made a very nice setting for a church. I was disappointed to find out that they had sold it.

I started attending the UU church again last time I was in town, and while the interior of their building is quite nice, the exterior does not at all compare to the old Westmount location.

I don't know the house but I can guess that it might be the one pictures in a Journal article from possibly the early to mid 1980s, talking about a house made with sprayed on concrete.

That resort is sooo cool! However, like the downtown courthouse, water stains forming on the walls of zero eave houses and buildings sure make them look like crap in short order. ...and what a drab site selection - horrible marriage of design and site selection. Imagine if that design idea had been placed in some jungle or on a cliff side - basically almost anywhere but where it is, it could have been a great success.

It is directly east of Highway 21 and Highway 14 interchange (SW corner). It is on google and has a Chandos Construction sign on the fence in street view.

I've always been quite fond of Westbrook Drive. Golf course on one side, ravine on the other, nice mixture of modern and quaint homes from different eras on oversized lots.
