This city should seek funding to build a high speed train to Jasper or Hinton not Calgary who needs to get closer there. I want a faster way to the Rockies! That would be so friggin cool

Why should the City pay for this, and not the Province?

^I had a slightly more practical idea in this thread:

It would be tough to overcome the huge upfront capital costs with low ridership projections. In the park you'd be faced with environmental and safety issues.
Is this a case of great rather unrecognized problem seeking a solution? i.e. How do we get to the mountains faster? Or How do increase people but limit vehicles in the parks? Train may be one solution but there may be others. Maybe a better airport in Hinton with a faster solution to get people into Jasper from Hinton. |

Or just take the VIA and sit back, enjoy. It is a wonderful experience.

Indeed. I've taken the trip a few times. It's a relaxing way to travel, and you're often in a conversation with fellow travelers before the train even leaves the station.

High speed train to Vancouver with a stop in Jasper would be even better!

Won't happen. Freight is the priority on that routing and no way in heck will another line be added.

^^ Yeah I know, but one can dream! At the very least I wouldn't mind seeing an express VIA to Vancouver that doesn't stop at every lightbulb along the way.

That would require an extra track to be built.
Most of the time the via train stops is because freight has priority somewhere close by, and has to let pass. |

I thought I heard something about plans for additional CN lines being built from Edmonton to Van and Rupert. It could have been just idle chatter here or plans re: Port Alberta, can't remember.

I don't want to take a train. That is to much money. CN licks balls. You need a high speed train or nothing and a air port? That would end up costing 300$ or more to fly there. Might as well drive the 3 hours(depending where you live) A high-speed line from Vancouver to Edmonton with stops in Jasper and Hinto would be great. I don't see how this high speed train idea would not bring high numbers or travelers. I would much rather go to Hinton and Jasper then Calgary.... Like come on. But an air plane is a no. Canada needs to think like europe and start doing these hig-speed trains. You can land at the Edmonton airport and connect by a train to Jasper or Hinton either direct or go to downtown and connect from there.. Depending on what people are doing... Those CN trains are so slow. Just like driving a car but you can see things you wouldnt see from the car. My point is I want to get there faster. Hell just up the Yellow Head to 160km to Hinton widen the road to 4 lanes. LOL

how much do you think HSR would cost to get to hinton or Jasper?
Keep in mind - the estimated cost to build a line Edm-Cal is in the 20-40 Billion dollar mark. A line to Calgary would be shorter, and over terrain much flatter and easier to build on than a line from Edmonton to Hinton/Jasper. It would likely be cheaper to fly. |

Its cheaper just to move the mountains closer to Edmonton. You just need a little faith! LOL

Now I'm conjuring up images of what Edmonton would look like with a mountain backdrop like Calgary or Vancouver has... Thanks PRT... I have faith!

Well we do have the growing mountain of trash in the West End.
With Edmonton being as flat as it is, from vantage point of the 5th floor of the Humanities Building at the U of A (where I had a meeting today), the mountain of trash is really noticeable on the northwest horizon. |

Hey, just wait for another snow mountain (not going to get one this winter) and shoot from the appropriate angle.

^ can you imagine the marketing around our "snow mountains" on a good year ... 15 mm of fresh powder, bits of sand, with a snow base pack of 500m...
