Parks and Recreation Edmonton is a city of parks, including the longest urban park in North America threading through the North Saskatchewan river valley. There are hundreds of parks and recreation areas in the metro region, and this forum offers the opportunity to discuss them, suggest improvements, raise concerns and spread the word.

Default South West Rec Complex to be city run

Congrats to the folks at the city for deciding to keep this in house.

It was built with civic dollars so it should be run with city staff. One look at places like Kinsman Arena, Knights of Columbus Arena and others and you can tell the difference as that place is not as nice as a city arena.

The people who wanted to run the SW complex were from Ontario and wouldn't think about the community aspect of our recreation, just the bottom line.

This facility is going to be a crown jewel of facilities as it is the first four sheet arena in Alberta and I know the staff are going to take great pride in being a part of such a beautiuful facility.

Yeah, wouldn't want to save money so we can build more recreation centres in more parts of the City, much more important to spend more so that Edmonton Inc. controls it.

Last time I looked, we have a number of very good facilities that are not run by the City (e.g. YMCA's, World Health Club, etc.), but heck, we have to keep it in house so that we need more City staff, don't we? And it's not like other parts of the City need new recreation centres that the savings could have been applied to, is it?

Having used Millenium Place in Sh Pk and Centennial Centre in Ft Sask, I have a hard time disagreeing with NorthernBillsFan. Especially Milleniump Place. They keep that facility immaculate, it seems to be managed and staffed by competent folks, and is a pleasure to visit. I'd give my left nut for a facility like that by my place.

What savings are realized when we taxpayers subsidize the cost of the ice? The city's operation model was cheaper than any private folks so the city is actually saving money.
