I watched the #4 bus this morning in the 82nd Avenue left turn lane EB at 75th st, trying to turn North. There were about 5 or 6 cars ahead of him and it was clear that it would have to wait for one or two more light changes. So the bus driver switched lanes and proceeded to go straight thru the intersection, off route heading EB with a full bus with students packed to the front. I do not know how he could detour back to his route and I wonder how many people wanted to get off on the stops that it missed?

Grant Moellmann Bridge Repaving

Grant Moellmann Bridge, the one that is on the north end of Wayne Gretzky Drive that crosses over the LRT tracks is taking forever to repave. About...

Grant Moellmann Bridge, the one that is on the north end of Wayne Gretzky Drive that crosses over the LRT tracks is taking forever to repave. About five weeks ago they put out barricades and constrained traffic to one lane at night so they could grind down the pavement on the bridge portion north bound for about 70 meters.

Then they packed up their equipment, they put the barricades away and left it like that for two weeks.

Then they came back, barricaded the south bound lanes and ground the the pavement on the bridge portion, south bound .

Then they packed up their equipment, they put the barricades away and left it like that for two weeks.

Last weekend they put up signs that from Friday night to Monday night that there would be major traffic disruptions on WGD. Sure enough, they put barricades up starting at 116th ave, more than 800 meters ahead of the construction zone forcing traffic to back up for even those turning on 118th Ave. They had a police car at 118th ave and another at 121st ave by Axe Music, when I went there on Saturday at around 11:00 am. I turned off before at 120th but I could not see any equipment or workers on the bridge.

There was no work being done on holiday Monday morning, they had already packed up their equipment, they put the barricades away and left it. They had only paved the 70 meters of the north bound lanes ONLY.

How long does it take to grind down two small sections of road and repave them? We are into it now five weeks and they haven't even finished the job. It looks like they are going to close it down AGAIN next weekend and do the south bound lanes. That means they have to put up all the barriers again, bring all the equipment back again, hire the police to monitor the traffic again. No wonder our taxes are so high!

As reported on Archdaily:
http://www.archdaily.com/76852/jaspe...ma/#more-76852

I need a little more time to look it over, but my initial opinion is very positive. I like the focus on public/social spaces especially the double height reading room, the "grand" stair-case / seating area and the outdoor terrace. The large roof, collecting the various constituent parts under one unifying element is also a nice, highly visible touch.

What are your reactions?

Are you a new student? In Engineering or Dentistry and need volunteer hours? Do you want to get leadership experience under your belt? Volunteer with Safewalk!

Safewalk provides a safe alternative to walking alone at night around the campus community and beyond. Safewalk was created not as a reaction to crime, but as a proactive step to build the safest possible campus community. Safewalk is free of charge and is available to any member of the surrounding community—undergrads, graduate students, staff, faculty, and members of the public.

Each Patroller is part of a co-ed team that escorts clients within Safewalk's boundaries. As a Patroller, you are the most visible aspect of our service, interacting directly with the general campus community. Your foremost role is to ensure the safety and comfort of your client, patrol the campus, and cultivate the credibility of Safewalk. It is absolutely crucial that Safewalk remain a presence on campus. Therefore, it is necessary for all teams to patrol campus throughout the evening.

So far as training goes, no prior training or experience is necessary! We will train you on all aspects of the position. As well, you get to meet new people, sign up for shifts when you want to (we do not assign days or shifts), get plenty of fresh air and exercise, multiple sponsorships and discounts from the community, reference letters, and the ability to advance and take on leadership positions.

However, applicants must:
- Be able to walk for 3 hours straight outside (even in winter)
- Be able to understand and speak english
- Be a University of Alberta student, or member of the University community
- Have clean criminal record
- Be enthusiastic and friendly
- Volunteer at least once a week

I had some relatives visiting from Europe. They'd never been to western Canada before, so they were spending a few days here before heading off to the mountains and then the coast. While they were here they saw west ed, the RAM, whyte, Fort Edmonton, and took a day trip to drumheller. On saturday though, I rounded up some spare bikes and we hit the river valley.

Started along Victoria Promenade

Visited the early morning stair-runners in Ezio Farone Park

Out and back along the high level

To the Legislature grounds

A quick stop for some of Alberta's brief history

Then to the market, where we snacked on bison burgers and were caught in a sun shower

Back along the river past the Hotel Mac heading to Churchill square

A quick tour around City Hall, the Art Gallery and Citadel, with some coffee and snacks at 3 Bananas

Then through the "bad part of town" to Louise Mckinney

Across the bridge to the Muttart and Edmonton Ski Club

West past the Low Level

A well deserved break after some hills

Continuing west along the river

Passing the walterdale, John Walters museum, High level, and on towards Emily Murphy Park.

Followed by the long climb back out

And ending with a leisurely spin through Glenora

Took us the better part of an afternoon, but it's a pretty excellent way to show off the city for someone who's never been here before...or even for someone who has lived here their whole lives (I think a lot of this was new to my parents too.)

Twice this past weekend i was around 106ave and 101/100st eating in chinatown and buying baking and both times i witnessed some very concerning acts by those in the area. I am not talking about those down on their luck who seek a good/safe nights sleep at the mission, but rather bullies and aggressors who harass and intimidate both the above and general visitors to the area. I almost had to get out of the car and go intervene when a family (older kids) were caught in the middle of two idiots yelling, pushing, and swearing at each other in front of garden bakery. This family looked like newer arrivals to Edmonton speaking sharp Mandarin and definitely not knowing what to do or if they were going to be robbed or the like. In the 10 mins or so i was outside waiting on both occasions i saw similar issues all along 96ave and at the corner of 101st. Friends of mine who love Calgary's chinatown (not excluding concerns they have as well) and visit it every time they are there rarely step foot in our 'ghetto' town as they simply have given up having to deal with these issues.

Would it kill the EPS to have a beat continuously in this area? How about stationing a chinese and aboriginal officer or 2 to begin to establish some community presence and interaction with those around the area?

I am sick and tired of these people being able to do this in the middle of the afternoon (or any time for that matter) to innocent families walking by.

Often times I see the same 5-10 characters there causing the majority of the problems and dealing in the open.

I would truly like someone from the EPS to provide us with some feedback or explanation of the lack of a visible presence in this area.

For some reason probably unrelated to the incidence of bike theft, I've just received a rash of stole bike email notifications in one day, today, ten, at last count, each a different bike. They come from an Edmonton stolen bike registry run by Edmonton Bike Commuters, which I think is a very good idea.

I suspect someone at EBC has found the time to concentrate on this. I'm glad to see people using this registry - not only those who lose bikes, but those who might see them or find them.

These are some nice bikes going missing. The apartment building beside mine just had every wheel that wasn't secured stolen off bikes locked to the railing - five wheels in total. Who is buying these? I've always suspected they were going out of town, and maybe parted out on eBay or Kijiji, etc.

If you ride to work, like I do, try to keep your bike indoors. Even if it's indoors (unless it's in your cubicle), get a good heavy duty lock and chain, and leave the lock there. That way, you're not carrying a 40lb lock around with you. Same at home, whether you lock it outside, or in the garage. Get one of those good heavy duty locks, and leave it there.

You can have get a decent lightweight lock you carry with you for going to the store or something along those lines, but if you're going to be parking in the same place often, then get a good lock with a heavy chain that goes between both wheels somehow, and leave it where you're going to be parking. If you are going somewhere other than your regular locations, lock it up in a high visibility location. Use a good uLock, and a thick cable to go around your front wheel.

A lot of this particular stuff is more organized crime. They have saws, and bolt cutters, and trucks to throw your bike (parts) into, someplace to store their booty, and they have customers or a middleman. They scout it out and make plans. But there's also crimes of opportunity, and as far as that goes, they'll take anything not securely attached. Unless you're racing or something, or do a lot of work on your bike and use quick release a lot, it's a good idea to either bolt it on good or take it with you when you leave the bike.

I'm going to be visiting Edmonton with my girlfriend this December to visit a family friend. Unfortunately, there's a possibility that we can't get picked up at the airport, so I was wondering about public transportation into the city.

The airport's website wasn't really clear on what options there are beyond taking a taxi (which isn't really in our budget). Google Maps' transit directions pulled up a crazy two-hour walk-a-thon, which isn't realistic for us in December.

How does one get to the city from the airport?

Thanks in advance.

The reason I ask is that on a recent WestJet flight from Toronto on a 737-800 I was surprised to discover that no seatback TV's were fitted. I thought these things were pretty much standard across the board, especially as the 737-800 is one of the latest additions to WJ's fleet. I wasn't the only one surprised by this, and even a flight attendant made one of their flippant remarks drawing attention to the lack of TV's by saying "but smell the leather" as if trying to extol the virtues of new leather seats to offset the lack of screens.
