For those of you with high school aged-students in your family:

The Summer Work Student Exchange is a national YMCA exchange program offering 16- and 17-year-old youth the opportunity to improve their second official language skills while gaining valuable work experience. For six weeks in the summer participants are matched with a youth in another province where the second language (either French or English) predominates, and are hosted in each other’s homes. They are given a full-time paid work placement in the not-for-profit sector and participate in organized activities and events in their new community on weekends.

The success of the program is based on the effort and enthusiasm of the students in living with a new family, working at a new job and developing their second official language skills.

The main benefits to students are:
-Improved French/English skills
-A positive, paid work experience in another province
-Knowledge of another region of Canada and another culture
-Greater maturity

The only cost to participate in the program is a small $50 registration fee, payable upon acceptance to the program. Travel to and from host communities are covered as part of the program.
